Last Time Out
Wake Forest 4, Northwestern 2 (Jan. 29)
Stepping into a weekend that was up for grabs for all involved, Wake Forest women's tennis took care of business during its first day of the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend. Matched up against Northwestern University, the Demon Deacons clinched the doubles point before totaling three wins in singles.
Two groups of doubles - No. 2 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth and No. 15 Samantha Martinelli/Casie Wooten - each found themselves in tight battles, taking a 4-3 lead in their respective matches. Nevertheless, Martinelli and Wooten reached a first win of the afternoon (6-3) before Brylin and Killingsworth finished shortly afterward with a 6-3 result of their own.
Wooten was the first Wake Forest player to win both a set and victory in singles, downing Sydney Pratt in a dominant second set (6-4, 6-1). After falling short in set one, No. 75 Anna Campana dominated during her second frame en route to a standout win. Being one of two final Deacs remaining, Brylin stayed heady through two sets before eventually winning due to a code violation. Her match secured the victory for Wake Forest.
NC State 4, Wake Forest 0 (Jan. 30)
The ITA Kickoff Regional Championship took up Sunday evening (Jan. 30) for Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons matched up with a familiar conference foe, No. 8 NC State (5-0). The Wolfpack would end the day remaining undefeated with a 4-0 decision that secured a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships being held next month in Madison, Wisconsin.
NC State won the first match in doubles play (6-1). Down 0-2 in third doubles, Peyton Pesavento and Saby Nihalani tied up their match by winning back-to-back games. Competition became tight for the next pair of games (3-3) before the duo fell in three straight. No. 2 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth stayed ahead for nearly the entirety of their doubles match, which ended unfinished.
No. 58 Casie Wooten became the first Demon Deacon to capture a set win in singles for the second day in a row. After about an hour playing in singles, NC State increased its advantage to 2-0 after winning on court three. No. 35 Carolyn Campana fought hard in first singles but eventually fell to No. 8 Jaeda Daniel in two sets, which bumped the Wolfpack's lead to 3-0. Another NC State member, No. 25 Abigail Rencheli, sealed the evening in a two-set finish of her own over No. 75 Anna Campana.

No. 75 Anna Campana
Doubles:

No. 15 Samantha Martinelli/Casie Wooten
Scouting the Opposition
After dropping its first two contests of 2022, South Carolina defeated Princeton, 4-2, last Sunday (Jan. 30). The Gamecocks have a standout first-year in Sarah Hamner, the No. 2 singles player in the nation. Additional ranked members include Ayana Akli (No. 28) and Megan Davies (No. 118). Last season, Davies was named to the All-SEC Second Team and SEC All-Tournament Team as a senior. She and Allie Grekowski stand at No. 37 in doubles. Entering this spring, South Carolina received votes to be placed in the ITA Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Likewise to South Carolina, Campbell also most recently picked up a team win (6-1 vs. Georgetown) after falling in each of its first two season matches. A doubles duo of Rhona Cook and Mialy Ranaivo has tallied a pair of wins. Campbell's entire eight-person roster consists of underclassmen. The Camels went 4-8 overall in 2020-21, including a 2-3 mark in the Big South Conference.
Up Next
Wake Forest will take a week off from match play after Saturday's matches before holding another doubleheader on Feb. 19, involving Furman University and North Carolina Central.
