Demon Deacons Take 11-Stroke Lead into Final Round of Stroke Play at Stephens Cup

10/10/2022 7:35:00 PM | Women's Golf

JUNO BEACH, Fla. - The Wake Forest Women's golf team will take an 11-stroke lead on an elite field into Tuesday's final round of stroke play at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup.

Four Demon Deacons are inside the top 10 on the individual leaderboard while the team has an 11-stroke lead over No. 1 Stanford. Senior Rachel Kuehn has a two-stroke lead on the field on the individual leaderboard.

Play was suspended due to darkness so Duke, South Carolina and USC will finish on Tuesday morning prior to the start of the third round.

Graduate Emilia Migliaccio started things off on a high note for the Deacs, with a birdie on her first hole of round one on Monday morning. Lauren Walsh, Carolina Chacarra and Kuehn all also registered birdies on at least one of their first three holes of the day. Kuehn and Chacarra went on to each register at least one more birdie before the turn, Chacarra with two.

Kuehn carried the momentum into her second nine holes of the day, registering three more birdies and zero bogeys on the round. She started the second round at five under par and led the field. Chacarra was right behind her at two under and in a tie for fourth.

Mimi Rhodes balanced two early bogeys with three birdies before her first round was over to start the second round one under par and tied for 10th. Lauren Walsh regained some momentum to close out her first round, with three birdies on her final five holes to finish the first 18 at two over.

Wake Forest continued their run at the top of the board, as Migliaccio and Chacarra each birdied the second hole of their second rounds and Kuehn birdied the third hole of her second round. Rhodes registered three birdies over four holes before she made the turn which shot her up seven spots on the leaderboard to sit inside the top five.

The Deacs hot streak kept going to finish the second round, as Rhodes registered her fourth and fifth birdies of the round coming out of the turn. Walsh also had back-to-back birdies on 18 and one and Migliaccio also registered her fourth birdie of the day, second of the round, on hole two.

Back-to-back birdies on seven and eight helped Walsh turn in a second round score of five-under that got her up 14 spots on the leaderboard to a tie for seventh at three under for the day. Rhodes also birdied the seventh hole to finish her second round three under par. She enters tomorrow's final round of stroke play tied for third at four under par.
