Wake Forest Suffers Five-Set Defeat at Notre Dame

Olivia Franke had a standout, two-way showing for the Black and Old Gold.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Wake Forest volleyball (12-6, 4-3) found itself in another toe-to-toe conference battle on Friday evening (Oct. 14), visiting Notre Dame (8-9, 3-4). Taking the Fighting Irish to five sets, the Demon Deacons ultimately fell just short in the evening's conclusion (25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 25-14, 13-15).

Olivia Franke tied her career-high for the second time this year, finishing with 12 kills on a .667 attacking percentage. The junior middle blocker additionally assisted on seven blocks.

Paige Crawford tallied her fourth double-double in the last five matches: a team-high 13 kills, along with 10 digs.

Playing back in her home state of Indiana, Olivia Murphy provided a spark as a reserve, totaling eight kills. Emmy Ogogor chipped in eight kills of her own, along with seven blocks.

Setters Rian Baker and Andrea Fuentes collected 22 and 15 assists, respectively. Baker also reached a new season high of four service aces. Fuentes added 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the year.

Emma Farrell led Wake Forest's defense with 18 digs. Peyton Suess posted nine digs and seven blocks.
 

How it Happened

  • Two kills by Olivia Franke firstly put Wake Forest on the scoreboard in set one.

    • Ashley Slater soon threw back a hit of her own from the right side to place the team up 6-4.

  • Continuing a few rallies, the Deacs landed successful blows early on, led by three immediate attacks by Paige Crawford.

  • Notre Dame called the match's first timeout, trailing 11-6.

  • Coming out of the break, the Fighting Irish scored on four of the next five possessions.

  • Nevertheless, Franke and Slater continued to make plays, and Notre Dame struggled with errors before taking another floor break, down 17-11.

    • Emmy Ogogor picked up a solo block on the next action.

  • The Fighting Irish found momentum on another run, 5-1, forcing a Deacon timeout.

    • Notre Dame cut into the deficit, 19-16, at the time of play.

  • The home squad would only score once more in the period afterward, however, as Wake Forest stayed confident to rack up a 6-1 finish.

    • Franke swung a middle kill to put the Deacons at set point, and Emma Farrell took care of the deed on a final service ace.

  • Wake Forest won set one, 25-17.
