
No. 12 Wake Forest Drops Non-Conference Contest at No. 17 James Madison

The Demon Deacons have won 11 of their last 13 matches, highlighted by top-10 wins against Virginia and Louisville in back-to-back ACC contests.
HARRISONBURG, Va. - The No. 12 Wake Forest field hockey team suffered a 2-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon against No. 17 James Madison at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Deacs (11-4, 3-1 ACC), who came into the contest on a season-long six match win streak, trailed for the first time since its conference opener at No. 1 North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 23 after the Dukes (8-5) found the back of the net in the first and second quarters.
Wake Forest blanked James Madison in the second half, highlighted by outstanding play from the defensive penalty corner unit as the Deacs denied 10 second-half shots and four second-half corner opportunities. Additionally, Lee Ann Gordon was credited with a defensive save after stopping a James Madison attempt late in the match.
Ellie Todd, the reigning back-to-back Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, notched a game-high four saves in 60 minutes. In 14 appearances, the Boston, Mass. native has made 45 defensive stops this season.
The Deacs have now given up less than two goals in its last nine matches, dating back to its 1-0 shutout victory against Ohio State in Columbus on Sept. 18. Overall, the Deacs have held opponents to two goals or less in 13 matches this season.
How It Happened

After both teams traded possession throughout the opening minutes of the match, Ellie Todd made her first save following James Madison's first shot and penalty corner at the three-minute mark.

Wake Forest received a corner opportunity of their own minutes later. The Deacs attempted the team's first shots, but James Madison's goalie denied the opportunity as the match remained scoreless at the halfway point of the first period.

With 2:49 remaining in the first quarter, James Madison found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

The Deacs posted a pair of great opportunities in the circle with eight minutes remaining, but the match remained scoreless as James Madison's defense poked the ball away on both occasions.

Sky Caron fired the Demon Deacons' second shot fresh off the team's second corner of the match, but the strike was blocked and James Madison continued to lead 1-0 with seven minutes remaining in the second period.

The Dukes added to its lead (2-0) as a James Madison attacker deflected the ball into the back of the net at the 25-minute mark.

Prior to the score, the Demon Deacon defense blocked a Duke shot attempt.

Meike Lanckohr dribbled her way through the circle for Wake Forest's final attack of the first half, but the ball was pushed wide of the goal.

Todd reeled in her second save of the match as the freshman made a diving stop on James Madison's first attempt of the second half.

Wake Forest continued to apply pressure throughout the period as Ashley Hart fired her first shot attempt wide at the 39-minute mark.

The Demon Deacon defense continued to make big plays in the third quarter, denying back-to-back James Madison penalty corners as the defensive penalty corner unit blocked ensuing attempts by the Dukes late in the period.

After Wake Forest's fourth corner attack of the match, Todd made another huge save, her third of the afternoon, following a James Madison fastbreak with just over 10 minutes remaining in the non-conference contest.

The Deacs blocked a James Madison shot following another penalty corner before Lee Ann Gordon notched a defensive save at the 56-minute mark.

This marked the final shot attempts of the match as James Madison secured a 2-0 victory.
