Demon Deacons Poised for ACC Cross Country Championships

The Wake Forest men are seeking their first ACC title since 1994, while the women are seeking their first since 2002.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country programs will compete at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Cross Country Championships Friday at the Panorama Farms Course in Charlottesville, Va.
 
The Men's 8K Championship is set for a 10:40 a.m. start, followed by the Women's 6K Championship at 11:30. ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) will host live coverage of both meets, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
 
Flash Results will post live scoring during and at the conclusion of both races and may be accessed at Live Results.
 
Last Time Out - Panorama Farms XC 23 Invitational
  • In the regular season finale for both programs, the Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams both recorded top-five finishes at the annual Panorama Farms XC 23 Invitational on Oct. 15.
  • Wake Forest joined host Virginia as the only schools to have both programs (men and women) finish in the top-five.
  • Despite missing last season's regional runner-up Aaron Las Heras, three Deacs finished in the top-10 in the men's 8k. Wake Forest was paced by two-time All-American Zach Facioni, who finished second overall (23:11.5). Thomas Vanoppen (23:18.4) and Luke Tewalt (23:24.7) joined Facioni in the top-10 placing fourth and ninth, respectively.
  • Joaquin Martinez De Pinillos (23:32.4) and Ben Mitchell (23:46.6) also had solid performances as they finished 11th and 22nd, respectively.
  • In the women's 5k, Wake Forest placed fifth out of 17 teams. The Demon Deacons were led by senior Mackenna Curtis-Collins, who finished 10th (17:01.4).
  • Fellow senior Elise Wright (17:27.4) and junior Madeline Rehm (17:34.7) also both finished in the top-35.
 
Demon Deacon Quick Hits - Men
  • The Wake Forest men's cross country team is currently ranked eighth nationally.
  • The Demon Deacons were selected to win the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) this season.
  • The Deacs, seeking the program's fifth ACC title and first since 1994, received eight first-place votes and finished with 210 total points.
  • Wake Forest placed just ahead of two-time defending ACC champion Notre Dame (five first-place votes, 205 points). North Carolina (193 points) and Virginia (164) each picked up one first-place vote to round out the top four.
  • The Deacs were also selected to win the NCAA Southeast Regional title this season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
  • This year, the Demon Deacons are led by two-time All-American Zach Facioni and last season's regional runner-up Aaron Las Heras. Wake Forest also returns All-Region honorees Luke Tewalt, Joaquin Martinez de Pinillos and Thomas Vanoppen.
