Deacons Show Balanced Play in Sunday Sweep Over Virginia

Wake Forest notched its fifth conference win of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Looking to bounce back from a Friday defeat, Wake Forest volleyball (13-10, 5-7) gained contributions from across the board throughout Sunday afternoon in a 3-0 sweep over Virginia (11-12, 3-9).

Five Demon Deacons ended with six or more kills, led by Ashley Slater's 10. The team's collective .358 attacking percentage was its second-best clip of 2022. Additionally, Wake Forest's 11 service aces tied for the most delivered this season.

Peyton Suess had her most efficient hitting performance of the fall, going 7-of-13 on attacks while committing zero errors (.538).

Andrea Fuentes put together a well-rounded showing of 15 assists, seven digs, and a career-high five service aces. That same mark in aces is the most by a Deac in a single match this season.

Rian Baker and Emma Farrell added 15 assists and seven digs, respectively. Emmy Ogogor completed six of her 10 attacking attempts, suffering only one error (.500).

Wake Forest has now won its last five meetings against the Cavaliers.
 

How it Happened

  • The first possession of the afternoon featured a freshman-to-freshman connection with Emma Farrell setting up Paige Crawford for a left-sided kill.

  • Immediately afterward, the Deacs gave Virginia a handful of issues with a batch of exceptional serves.

    • Andrea Fuentes dished out three service aces in a row.

      • Crawford followed with one of her own moments later.

  • Ashley Slater checked in to quickly give a spark, landing a kill to put Wake Forest ahead 10-5.

  • Emmy Ogogor clocked a hit next, leading to Virginia's second timeout.

    • The Deacons led 12-5 at the time.

  • Virginia found some success in its attacks, scoring four consecutive times.

    • Ogogor and Audrey Douglas secured a block to stop the run.

  • After Kalani Whillock placed another ace for the Deacs, Douglas and Crawfrd helped control things before Fuentes once again caught the Cavaliers' defense lacking on a lined serve.

  • A few possessions were traded, as Wake Forest stayed ahead, 22-15.

  • Slater and Peyton Suess stood out in the closing plays, helping the Deacs reach set point, 24-15.

  • Remaining focused after an error, Slater slammed a ball down to give her squad a victory in the opening frame.

  • Wake Forest took care of business in set one, 25-16.

    • The Deacs laced six aces in comparison to one by Virginia.

      • Four of those were rung in by Fuentes.

  • With back-to-back kills by Crawford, the Deacs went up 4-1 in the second period.

  • Slater, Suess, and Olivia Franke contributed well with strong punches, as Virginia worked to stay close by, 8-6.

  • Crawford and Ogogor picked up a kill apiece to keep Wake Forest up by three, a small advantage that they would hang on to for the next eight possessions.

  • A media timeout took place after Virginia made a service error.

    • Wake Forest continued to hold an upper hand in set two, 15-12.

  • As the Deacon hitters took turns, Crawford stretched the lead to 20-15 on a high swing.

    • Ogogor went down the middle on the very next play.

  • Douglas took care of things late, plugging in a pair of kills to have the Deacs at set point.

  • After Virginia landed a kill, the team suffered an error on its ensuing serve, giving Wake Forest the set win.

    • Wake Forest went up two sets to none after grabbing a 25-20 finish in the second.

      • Zero lead changes and zero tied scores occurred through the first two sets.

      • Crawford tallied four kills during the period.

  • Fuentes found Franke on a crafty assist to open set three.

  • After three early ties, Slater started a 5-0 push that saw Wake Forest leading 9-3.

    • Virginia next called a timeout.

  • Two more kills by Douglas and Ogogor allowed the Deacons to remain up six.

    • However, the Cavaliers had an answer with a 6-0 run to tie the margin at 11 all.

      • A Douglas kill ended the spree.

  • The third set then became a story of continuous back-and-forth play, with Wake Forest staying up by two points in large part to Crawford and Suess' attacks.

  • Once Virginia took its first lead of the day, 19-18, Crawford evened the score with a punch from the outside.

  • The Cavaliers struggled with errors in their serves, but nevertheless stayed within reach, as three more ties occurred.

  • Crawford and Franke each handed out timely aces for the Deacs, reaching match point (24-22).

  • In a similar fashion to set one, Slater flew to put the cap on the frame, throwing in a kill to win set three, 25-23, and the match for Wake Forest.

  • Wake Forest swept Virginia, 3-0.
