Demon Deacons Earn Ninth Shutout of the Season in 2-0 Victory Over Miami

10/9/2022 3:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Wake Forest picked up its third ACC win of the 2022 campaign behind goals from Liv Stowell and Alex Wood.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's soccer team (9-3-2, 3-3 ACC) held ACC foe Miami (4-6-2, 1-5 ACC) to zero shot attempts en route to a 2-0 victory over the Hurricanes Sunday evening at Spry Stadium.

Sunday marked the first time Wake Forest has held an opponent to zero shots this season. Meanwhile, offensively, the Demon Deacons recorded a season-high 28 shot attempts.

Additionally, the Deacs held Miami to only one corner kick, which is the fewest the Hurricanes have attempted in a match this season.

Wake Forest struck first in the 32nd minute when Taryn Chance sprinted down the left side of the pitch and sent a cross into the box for Liv Stowell. Stowell then blasted a shot from three yards out into the net for her fifth goal of the season.

The Deacs doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute when Giovanna DeMarco guided a cross from Kristin Johnson toward freshman Alex Wood. Wood then beat a Miami defender to the ball and fired a shot past the outreached arm of the Miami goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season to extend the Demon Deacons' lead.

Wake Forest continued its stellar defensive performance over the ensuing 18 minutes and came away with the 2-0 victory.

Sunday's win marked Wake Forest's third victory over an opponent ranked in the top-50 of the NCAA RPI rankings.

Wake Forest will return to action Friday when the Demon Deacons travel to Chapel Hill to face Big Four opponent North Carolina at 7 p.m.

How It Happened
  • Wake Forest got going early, as Madeline Allburn got on the end of a Sophie Faircloth corner just 80 seconds into the match in her first career start.
    • The shot went just wide for a Miami goal kick.
  • The Demon Deacons kept the pressure up, as they won a couple of corners and took four shots in the first 15 minutes of play.
  • Liv Stowell called Miami goalkeeper, Melissa Dagenais, into action for the first time in the 20th minute and forced her into a diving save that went behind for another corner.
  • DeMarco worked hard to earn three shots in a seven-minute span and forced two more corners.
  • Stowell opened the scoring on the Deacs' ninth shot of the game in the 32nd minute.
    • Johnson played Chance down the line before the latter whipped in a perfect cross, which saw Stowell guide it into the back of the net.
  • The Demon Deacons went into the locker room with an advantage in shots (11-0), corners (5-0) and possession (68%).
  • The Deacs started the second half the same way they started the first, as they took eight shots and forced two saves in the first 15 minutes of the frame.
  • Wood doubled the advantage in the 72nd minute after DeMarco redirected a cross from Johnson to set up the freshman for her fifth goal of the season.
  • Hanks continued to cause the Miami defense problems following the Deacs' second goal as she created four shots for herself in the final 20 minutes of action.
  • Miami earned its first and only corner of the game in the 86th minute, which was handled by Parks with ease.
  • As a team, the Demon Deacons took 17 shots in the second half and forced six corners.

Tony Time with Coach da Luz
"We were dominant from the opening whistle. We had a really good start. Defensively, we pressed them immediately. Our passing and our spacing was really good today, which created a lot of really good chances. We needed to be more clinical in the box, but I'm happy with three points (in the ACC) and another shutout." - head coach Tony da Luz
