
Deacs Rout Cavaliers in Charlottesville on Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In its final road trip of fall regular-season play, Wake Forest volleyball (15-13, 7-10) took care of business on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 20), taking down the Virginia Cavaliers (12-15, 4-12) in a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-23, 27-25).
The win secured a season sweep for the Demon Deacons over Virginia. Additionally, Wake Forest has now won its last six, all-time matchups against the Cavaliers.
Peyton Suess paced the hitting tempo, totaling a match-best 14 kills. Olivia Franke and Paige Crawford added 10 kills apiece.
Andrea Fuentes posted her third consecutive double-double – leading the Deacs in both assists (31) and digs (12).
Emmy Ogogor finished with six kills (.357 attacking percentage) and seven blocks.
Emma Farrell chipped in nine digs and six assists while Megan Merril contributed to the Deacon defense with eight digs.
How it Happened

After Virginia scored the match's opening three points, Paige Crawford put Wake Forest on the scoreboard with a kill.

Megan Merril then immediately followed with a service ace.

Olivia Franke threw one to the floor soon after, with the Deacs trailing 5-4.

Peyton Suess checked in and gave an immediate impact, nailing three consecutive kills to even the margin at 7-7.

Action became traded a few more times, as Emmy Ogogor slammed a ball to create an 11-11 tie.

With the help of an Audrey Douglas kill and ace by Emma Farrell, Wake Forest took a three-point lead and forced a timeout by the host.

Virginia found a groove after the break, however, tacking a 5-0 push to seize the lead once again, 19-17.

Crawford caught fire in her hitting, totaling three kills to again tie the margin, 21-21.

Douglas and Ogogor connected on a block, and Andrea Fuentes delivered an ace to again cause Virginia to regroup.

Wake Forest led 23-21 at the time of play.

A kill by Ogogor and a bad set by the Cavaliers put the finishing touches on set one in Wake Forest's favor, 25-21.

Crawford had five kills in the period.

Virginia was first to jump in front once the second frame unfolded, 4-1.

Attacks by Franke and Suess, including a block by the former, helped the Deacs claw back, 6-5.

Posting points on four of their next five possessions, the Cavaliers extended their advantage to 10-6.

Ogogor completely took over for Wake Forest in the set's middle section, racking up kills and blocks to help her Deacons stay close.

Suess took off to land a hit and tie things up before Virginia suffered another bad set.

Wake Forest took its first lead of set two, 15-14, as a media timeout was issued.

Suess continued to act as a main anchor, piling kills and giving her squad a small lead.

Franke made a reception and then was set up perfectly by Fuentes to slam a kill, putting the Deacs ahead, 20-18.

However, Virginia would not go away quietly, stretching a 4-1 burst to leap in front again, 22-21.

Wake Forest took a break to talk things over.

Out of the timeout, Crawford and Ogogor were able to land successful swings, as the Deacs again saw themselves in front.

Two more kills by Suess put an end to the period in Wake Forest's favor, 25-23.

Suess went 7-of-14 on attacks during the set.

A few mistakes by Virginia allowed the Deacs to go up 5-3 in set three.

The Cavaliers soon settled, piecing six-straight points to take a 10-6 lead.

A Suess kill ended the run.

Through the ensuing rallies, Crawford was a major spark and Fuentes laced her second ace.

Wake Forest still trailed, 13-10.

Another push, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Franke, evened things at 15 all.

The score became tied once again after eight more total possessions, as Fuentes and Ogogor notched an assisted block.

Virginia took a timeout as a result.

Franke sent in an ace as soon as Wake Forest stepped back onto the floor, up 20-19.

Both sides scored twice, and the Deacs were successful on a challenge as the set went into extra points.

Franke lined a kill, and Suess ended the set on an ace, winning the match in sweeping fashion.

Wake Forest defeated Virginia, 3-0.
