Gebbia Era Officially Tips Off Monday Night

The Demon Deacons are set to begin the new season at home against Elon Monday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Opening Night is finally here! The Wake Forest women's basketball team begins the Coach Megan Gebbia era and the 2022-23 season Monday night against Elon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.

The Deacs (0-0) are coming off a 93-50 win in the Winston-Salem Tipoff Classic on Sunday where they were led by an impressive performance from junior Jewel Spear. The guard netted 27 points in the victory in just 22 minutes played. The Colony, Texas native finished the afternoon with seven rebounds and four assists while shooting an efficient 8-of-11 from the field including 6-of-7 from behind the arc.

The Phoenix (0-0) defeated Belmont Abbey, 71-50, in their exhibition on Friday night. Elon center Evonna McGill recorded a double-double with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds in 18 minutes. Additionally, 11 Phoenix players scored and all 14 saw the floor. Last season, Elon finished with a 17-12 record including a 9-9 mark in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (ET) at LJVM Coliseum. For those not at the arena, fans can tune in to ACC Network Extra.

  • Alex Sharp led the Deacons with a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Alexandria Scruggs scored 12 points including eight in the first quarter. Ivana Raca had 13 points and six boards.  Gina Conti led all players with six assists.

CHASING 1000

After breaking the program record with 30 double-figure scoring games, netting the fourth-most points in school history a season ago with 567 and leading the ACC in scoring with 18.3 points per game, junior Jewel Spear has put herself in position to join exclusive company in the 1,000-point club early in the season.

She went into the year with 839 career points, just 161 points away from becoming the 30th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.

STANDOUT STAT

Starting the season with the Winston-Salem Tipoff Classic last Sunday, the Demon Deacons were efficient on the offensive end of the floor, netting 93 points and 10-of-11 players finding the score column in the 40-point victory.

Overall, the Deacs knocked down 34-of-65 shots (52.3 percent) and recorded an eye-popping 27 assists in the game or on 79 percent of the made baskets.

UP NEXT

This will be the first of three games during the week with the Demon Deacons set to travel in-state East Carolina on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+

The first ACC game of the Gebbia era comes on Sunday when Wake Forest travels to Charlottesville, Va. for a 2 p.m. tipoff against Virginia on ACC Network.
