
Opening Night is Here! Demon Deacons Open Regular Season with Double-Header

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Year three of the Steve Forbes Era begins Monday night when the Demon Deacons host the Fairfield Stags in the opening night matchup of the 2022-23 campaign inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Prior to the men's game, the Wake Forest women's basketball team will host in-state foe Elon at 5 p.m. inside LJVM Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons are coming off of an 82-69 exhibition win over Winston-Salem State. Daivien Williamson led the Demon Deacons in the victory over the Rams with 25 points on 7-for-10 shooting and 8-for-9 from the line.
As a team, the Deacs made the most of their trips to the free throw line, converting on 25-of-32 attempts from the charity stripe.
In their Joel debuts, graduate guard Tyree Appleby and junior forward Andrew Carr both posted double-figure scoring performances. Appleby finished the night with 17 points to go along with five rebounds and a team-high tying four assists. Carr ended the game with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a team-high two blocks.
Fairfield is led by head coach Jay Young from the sidelines. Young is entering his fourth year in charge of the program. The Stags are coming off a 15-18 (8-12 MAAC) season, which saw them reach the conference quarterfinals before falling to eventual MAAC champions and Elite Eight squad Saint Peter's.
Young brings back junior forward Supreme Cook, who scored 10.1 points per game in addition to a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game. Veteran guard, Jake Wojcik, will also be returning for his redshirt senior season. Wojcik tallied 9.5 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game and 2.0 assists per game last season.
Monday night's tipoff inside LJVM is scheduled for 8:00 p.m and the game will stream on ACC Network Extra.

Road to 2,000
Tyree Appleby and Daivien Williamson each have the opportunity to etch themselves into history this year as they are both in reach of 2,000 career points.
Williamson returns after a career year with 389 points for an average of 11.2 points per game last season. The Winston-Salem native is now up to 1,340 career points between his time at Wake Forest and ETSU. He has proven himself as one of the best sharpshooters in Wake Forest history, with 97 three pointers over his two seasons in a Wake Forest uniform. Williamson is also an 83-percent career free throw shooter.
Appleby currently sits at 1,552 points over his first four collegiate seasons. He scored 899 points in two seasons at Cleveland State and 653 the last two seasons at Florida.
The Jacksonville, Ark. native averaged a career-high 17.2 points per game his sophomore year with the Vikings before making the switch to Gainesville. While with the Gators, he averaged 11.0 points per game while dishing out 3.5 assists per game.
