Wake Forest Unveils 2023 Schedule

The Demon Deacons’ 2023 slate will feature 21 home matches, including eight double-headers. Additionally, the Deacs will square off with two power five conference champions.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Following a stellar 2022 campaign which culminated in an NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, head coach Tony Bresky officially announced the 2023 slate for the Wake Forest men's tennis program Thursday.
 
"We are very excited about the quality of our schedule," said Bresky. "The ACC is very strong as always. Our out-of-conference schedule has multiple top-10 teams coming to Winston-Salem, giving our team the opportunity to compete against some of the best in the country on our home courts. We can't wait to get the season underway in January."
 
The Demon Deacons will kick off spring action by hosting a Universal Tennis (UTR) event from Jan. 8-15, before officially starting the 2023 season the following day with a double-header against Tennessee Tech and Elon at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
 
Four days later (Jan. 20), the Deacs will return to action for another double-header, facing Radford for consecutive matches at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
 
On Jan. 22, Wake Forest will face its first power five opponent as last season's Southeastern Conference (SEC) runner-up and NCAA semifinalist Tennessee will travel to Winston-Salem to face the Deacs at 1 p.m. The Demon Deacons will then face Queens at 5 p.m. to conclude their third-consecutive double-header.
 
ITA Kick-Off Weekend will take place Jan. 27-28.
 
After a six-day hiatus, Wake Forest will return to action on Feb. 5 to host defending NCAA and ACC Champion Virginia in a non-conference match at 1 p.m., before facing in-state foe Campbell at 5 p.m.
 
On Feb. 9, the Deacs will square off with Big 10 runner-up and NCAA semifinalist Ohio State at 5 p.m. Three days later (Feb. 12), the Demon Deacons will compete against South Carolina and Queens at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
 
Wake Forest will then head Champagne, Ill. for the ITA Indoor National Championships from Feb. 17-20, before returning home to host VCU (3 p.m.) and Belmont Abbey (6:30 p.m.) for a double-header on Feb. 28.
 
ACC action will commence four days later as the Demon Deacons will travel for consecutive road matches at Georgia Tech (March 3) and Clemson (March 5). Five days later, the Deacs will return to Winston-Salem to face Florida State at 4 p.m.
 
On March 12, Wake Forest will host Miami and Coastal Carolina for a double-header, before traveling to Waco, Texas to face last season's Big 12 Champion Baylor one week later.
 
The Demon Deacons will then return to Winston-Salem to square off with Louisville on March 24, before hosting Notre Dame and UNCG on March 26.
 
This season, the Deacs will travel to face each of its 'Big Four' opponents as three of the following five matches will be against Duke (March 31), North Carolina (April 2) and NC State (April 12). Additionally, Wake Forest will host Virginia (April 7) and Virginia Tech (April 9) during the two-week span.
 
In the regular season finale, the Demon Deacons will travel to face Boston College (April 16) before opening postseason play.
 
This season's ACC Championship will take place from April 19-23 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
 
The NCAA Tournament opens with the NCAA First and Second Rounds on May 5-6 with the winners advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals on May 13 or 14. All three rounds will be at select campus sites. The winners of the Super Regionals will advance to the NCAA Team Championships in Orlando, Fla., from May 18-21.
 
2023 Season Outlook
Wake Forest returns nine Demon Deacons from a season ago, including 2022 All-ACC second team honoree Melios Efstathiou and 2022 All-ACC third team selections Jurabek Karimov and Filippo Moroni.
 
Efstathiou, a product of Limassol, Cyprus, logged a 16-7 dual singles record last spring. He has collected a total of 76-career singles wins. Efstathiou posted a stellar 13-5 (5-1 ACC) record at No. 2 and 3 singles last season, including a 3-2 record at the No. 1 position. Overall, Efstathiou is 76-31 in singles action since joining the Deacs.
 
In his first season in Winston-Salem, Karimov's road to third-team All-ACC a season ago included a 6-12 (2-3 ACC) dual singles record. The Tashkent, Uzbekistan logged three ranked wins. In doubles competition, Karimov has posted a 6-2 (4-1 ACC) mark in dual matches.
 
Moroni posted an 11-3 mark in dual matches and reached the NCAA Singles Championships Round of 32 during the 2022 campaign. Of note, Moroni earned two ranked wins and clinched four matches with the Demon Deacons last season.
 
Sustained Success
Wake Forest has made the NCAA Tournament in each of the past nine seasons, including the 2018 season in which the Demon Deacons won the program's first ever NCAA Championship.
 
Since head coach Tony Bresky took over the program in 2012, the Deacs have accumulated 31 All-ACC honors. Of note, five Demon Deacons earned All-ACC honors last season, marking the most in a single season in program history.
