Summiel Double-Double Helps Deacs Past High Point

12/3/2022 8:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball

The Demon Deacons were led by the second career double-double performance from Olivia Summiel as she posted 11 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind a career-high 16 rebounds from senior forward Olivia Summiel, the Wake Forest women's basketball team captured a 68-51 victory over High Point Saturday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

With the third win in a row, the Deacs (6-3, 0-1 ACC) remain unbeaten at home to start the 2022 campaign and have won 15 of the last 16 games at home against non-conference games. Additionally, Saturday's win over the Panthers (1-7, 0-0 Big South) marked the third-consecutive season the Deacs have started 4-0 at home.

The Demon Deacons outrebounded the Panthers, 46-25. With a game-high and career-high 16 rebounds, Summiel notched her second career double-double and the first for her this season. Additionally, Saturday's performance marked Summiel's 10th double-digit rebounding performance of her career.

This marks the most rebounds by a Demon Deacon since Ivana Raca pulled down 19 in a victory at Virginia Tech on Jan. 17, 2021.

Wake Forest was led in the score column by senior guard Kaia Harrison and junior guard Jewel Spear as they both registered 14 points. Harrison was one point off her career high that she set earlier this season against Elon.

Sophomore guard Alyssa Andrews pitched in 11 points which tied her season best.

An exciting season awaits at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum as the Wake Forest women's basketball team! There is no better time than now to become a season ticket holder and support your Demon Deacons at home this season.

Along with your purchase of a $50 season ticket package this season there are many added benefits exclusive only to those who buy season tickets.

  • A pair of Niyah Becker free throws extended the Demon Deacons' lead to 14 at the 3:49 mark of the fourth quarter.

    • After a Spear layup gave the Deacs a 16-point lead, Summiel was fouled on a layup attempt which resulted in her first trip to the charity stripe this season.

FROM GEBBIA

"It was a really difficult game to have a one-day prep for. They run a similar style of motion and it's not the same but it's a situation where you have so much to go over and not a lot of time to get it right. It hurt us and they had a week to prepare for us. It scares you going into a game like this right before finals. We executed decently on the offensive end, but we had too many turnovers and too many missed free throws. That's something that we can control. If we're going to beat better teams. We've got to be able to take care of the ball. We've got to be able to hit as many free throws. That's gonna be a focus of mine going forward. They're a tough team to play because they're scrappy. They can shoot the three; everyone could shoot it if you're not there and you're off balance. I was pleased with how Alyssa Andrews came in off the bench. She gave us a spark at both ends. I am really happy for her. Even Niyah there at the end and did a really nice job. Then you had Olivia who steps up pretty much every game and tries to contribute in different ways. For her to have a double-double in a situation without Demeara playing as much given the matchup today. I am happy with the win, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us." - Coach Megan Gebbia
