WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team will face its second SEC foe of the season, the LSU Tigers, on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 10) as part of the 2022 Holiday Hoopsgiving at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
The Demon Deacons (7-2) are coming off a 77-57 loss at Clemson in their first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season last Friday. Wake Forest mounted a 7-1 season start for the second year in a row, having started 10-1 back in 2021-22.
Against the Tigers, Wake Forest knocked down at least eight three-pointers for the seventh game this season. In the first half, the Deacs connected on 6-of-15 attempts from deep to help them jump out to a 33-26 lead at the intermission. Wake's 78 three-pointers over nine games ranks fourth in the league, averaging 8.67 makes per game from beyond the arc.
Wake Forest was led by Winston-Salem native Daivien Williamson with 12 points on 5-of-11 from the field, his fourth double-digit scoring game of the season. Williamson was one of three Deacs to connect on at least two triples on Friday night.
Williamson (5th) and Tyree Appleby (4th) are both in the top five in the league with free throw percentages of 86.4 and 87.0
Cameron Hildreth joined Williamson in double figures against the Tigers with 11 points on three made field goals and four free throws. In addition to his 11 points, Hildreth joined Andrew Carr with a team-high tying six rebounds.
The Demon Deacon reserves provided an impactful spark, as Wake Forest's bench outscored Clemson's by a 22-4 mark. Additionally, Wake Forest poured in 24 points off turnovers, doubling Clemson's tally (12).
LSU (7-1) is led by first-year head coach Matt McMahon. McMahon took over the Tigers prior to this season after seven successful seasons at Murray State. The Tigers are coming off a 63-59 win against UT Arlington. Their only loss of the season came at the hands of Kansas State, 61-59, in the Cayman Islands Classic over Thanksgiving.
The Tigers are 2-1 in neutral-site games this season and have the advantage over the Deacs from last year as they defeated Wake Forest in the championship game of the Emerald Coast Classic in November 2021. On the court, the Tigers are led by veterans KJ Williams and Adam Miller. Both players are averaging over 16 points per game and shooting 40 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line. Williams is also averaging 7.4 boards per game.
Saturday afternoon's tipoff inside State Farm Arena is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ESPNU.
