Deacs Set for Senior Day Against Nationally-Ranked Georgia Tech

In the final regular season game of 2021-22, Wake Forest will face off against the No. 22 Yellowjackets at LJVM Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team is scheduled to play their final regular season game of the year on Sunday afternoon against No. 22 Georgia Tech at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Deacs (14-14, 4-13 ACC) are coming off a key victory over Syracuse on Thursday evening that helped vault them into 11th place in the Atlantic Coast Standings with one game remaining before the conference tournament. In one of her final home games in her career, senior forward Christina Morra had the best game of her career, totaling a career-best 21 points while also pulling down a career-best 15 rebounds in the Deacs largest ACC victory of the season.

The nationally-ranked Yellowjackets (19-9, 10-7 ACC) are currently on a three-game slide including two losses in overtime. Georgia Tech currently has the fifth best scoring defense in the country, allowing just 51.5 points per game. Conversely, the Yellowjackets 61.8 points per game ranks 229th in the country and 13th in the ACC. They have four players averaging double figure points including Lorela Cubaj who comes into the game with 10.4 points and 11.3 rebounds on average.

SENIOR DAY CEREMONY

Ahead of Wake Forest's final regular season game of the season, Wake Forest will honor senior forward Christina Morra as well as other senior members of the managerial staff and support staff. Please arrive early to thank our seniors for their contributions to the program. The ceremony will take place at approximately 12:40 p.m. ET.

Morra has suited up in 103 games, making 68 starts for Wake Forest scoring 832 career points. She currently ranks third in program history with a 51.2 shooting percentage.

  • Morra reached new career highs in points (21) and rebounds (15) against the Orange while shooting over 66 percent from the field in 29 minutes of play. The senior forward's previous career high of 19 points was set on three separate occasions over the last three seasons. Additionally, Morra's double-double was the third of her career and first of her senior season.

    • Three other Wake Forest players finished with 11 or more points – sophomore guard Jewel Spear totaled 19 points, junior forward Niyah Becker added 13 points, and freshman guard Elise Williams netted 11 points in the win.

  • The Demon Deacons were led by a double-digit performance from freshman guard Elise Williams. She helped lead the Deacs scoring effort to start the third quarter, netting eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. Williams finished the night with 10 points.

    • Fellow freshman Alyssa Andrews also had a strong start in her first career ACC game. Andrews posted nine points while also adding three rebounds to her total.

    • Freshman forward Malaya Cowles led the Deacs on the glass with nine rebounds in the game, the second-highest total in her young career. Sophomore forward Demeara Hinds ended the night with eight rebounds. 

SPREADING THE WEALTH

For the sixth consecutive game, Wake Forest had four or more players finish in double figures scoring. Additionally, the five-game stretch is the only time this conference season that Wake Forest has had four or more double-figure scorers in a single game.

Over that stretch, three Demon Deacons are averaging double-figure points in Jewel Spear (17.2 PPG), Christina Morra (11.8 PPG) and Elise Williams (10.8 PPG) while Kaia Harrison and Niyah Becker are each averaging 8.7 points per game.

STANDOUT STAT

After an All-ACC Freshman Team campaign put her on the map a season ago, sophomore guard Jewel Spear has taken her game to another level this year. Spear has seen significant increases in nearly every statistical category, making her a viable candidate for the most improved player in the ACC:

UP NEXT

Wake Forest is set to start postseason Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Tournament as the team will either play in the 11 vs. 14 game at 6:30 p.m. or the 12 vs. 13 game at 1:00 p.m.
