WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 5 Wake Forest women's golf team is ready to defend their 2020 title at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, South Carolina, this week. The event was not played in 2021 due to COVID-19.
Every team in the field is ranked inside the top 50, with six teams inside the top 15 and another three teams inside the top 25. Wake Forest is the second-highest ranked team in the field, as host school South Carolina is fourth in the latest Golfstat rankings.
The Demon Deacons are coming off a record-setting performance at the UCF Challenge two weeks ago, where they recorded the second-lowest 54-hole team score in relation to par in NCAA history. Freshman Carolina Chacarra finished with the lowest 54-hole score in relation to par in Wake Forest program history and tied the second-lowest score in relation to par in NCAA history.
The Deacs finished 45 strokes under par and won the event by 14 strokes, with Chacarra at 19 under and junior Rachel Kuehn at 12 under. Chacarra claimed the individual title by four strokes and Kuehn came in third seven strokes behind her. Chacarra recorded 18 birdies over 54 holes, the second-most in the field. Kuehn tallied 13 over her three rounds, the fifth-most in the field. Wake Forest led the way on par-four scoring, shooting 24 under on par-four holes for the event.
Wake Forest's performance at the 2020 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate was also one for the record books. The Demon Deacons won the event by an astonishing 26 strokes, the third-largest team margin of victory in Wake Forest program history.
The Deacons had their best showing on the final day, shooting a field-best 280 on the final 18 holes after carding a 287 and 288 in the first and second rounds, respectively. The culmination came from all five Deacs in the field, as each player finished inside the top 25 and three inside the top five. Then-junior Emilia Migliaccio took the individual title by one stroke, sealing the deal with a bogey-free final nine holes.
This year, Migliaccio will be covering the event as an on-course reporter for Golf Channel while Wake Forest is paired with Arizona State and LSU to start off the event Monday morning.
