Deacs Face Two Top-15 Road Matchups

Wake Forest is set to travel to No. 13 South Carolina on Thursday and to No. 1 Ohio State on Sunday.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 6 Wake Forest men's tennis team travels to No. 13 South Carolina and No. 1 Ohio State for its second and third road matches of the season, facing the Gamecocks Thursday at 5 p.m. ET and Buckeyes Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
MATCH SCHEDULE
Thursday, February 10th
No. 13 South Carolina
Graduate student Jakob Schnaitter won a three-set battle to clinch the match point as the Demon Deacons downed No. 7 Georgia, 4-3, and NC Central, 6-1 at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
The win was the Deacs first over a top-10 opponent this season and third-straight over Georgia in a series dating back to 1972. The Deacs improved their already impressive record at home to 92-4 since the 2017 season with two wins.
Schnaitter picked up the clutch three-set clinch in the first match over No. 7 Georgia. Against NC Central, No. 117 Robert Maciag gathered that honor to roll past the Eagles.
RANKED DEACS
Finding themselves in the singles rankings were Filippo Moroni (35), Melios Efstathiou (51), Eduardo Nava (71), Jurabek Karimov (99), Taha Baadi (118) and Robert Maciag (124). In doubles, Siddhant Banthia and Jakob Schnaitter are ranked at No. 34 with Robert Maciag and Ben Draper ranked at No. 37.
SCOUTING NO. 13 SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina leads the all-time series 25-13, but Wake Forest has won the last six meetings. The last time the Deacs played the Gamecocks was a 4-3 win in Winston-Salem. The Gamecocks have won eight straight matches to start the 2022 season.
Singles Rankings:
Sunday serves as the 12th meeting between the two programs in the series that dates to 1971. Ohio State holds an 8-3 record against the Buckeyes all-time. The last time the Deacs defeated the Buckeyes was a 4-2 win in 2018 at home.
A win for the Deacs would give them their second top-10 victory and first top-five triumph of the year. The top-ranked Buckeyes are currently 7-0, coming off sweeps over then-1st-ranked Tennessee, 4-0, and then-6th-ranked Virginia, 4-0.
Singles Rankings:
The dominant victory over Notre Dame Saturday advanced Wake Forest to the ITA Indoor National Championships for the sixth time since 2016, with the Deacs also winning it all in 2018.
It is scheduled for Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash., the 47th running of the annual event showcases 16 of the top men's Division I teams in the four-day tournament to crown an indoor national champion.
