Wake Forest’s Comeback Falls Short at Coastal Carolina

3/8/2022 9:40:00 PM | Baseball

The Deacs rallied in the ninth with three runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-out, two-RBI single from Adam Cecere.

CONWAY, S.C. --  Despite a ninth-inning rally, the Wake Forest baseball team fell for the first time of the season, 4-3, at Coastal Carolina Tuesday inside Springs Brooks Stadium.

Wake Forest (11-1) fought from behind to make the midweek contest a one-score contest with three runs on three hits, a walk, a hit batter and an error in the top of the ninth. When the Deacs were finally retired, they had both the potential tying and winning run on base.

The fielding error by the Chanticleers (8-5) plated Jake Reinisch as the sophomore and Tommy Hawke tallied back-to-back singles to open the final frame. With Michael Turconi on third and Brock Wilken on second, Adam Cecere lasered a two-RBI single to right field to score the pair. Cecere now leads Wake Forest with 18 hits and 18 RBIs.

Teddy McGraw made his third start of the season, tossing 2.2 innings and striking out a pair while giving up two runs.

Camden Minacci fanned a team-high three batters while blanking Coastal Carolina in 1.2 innings. The right hander struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth.

Derek Crum, Crawford Wade and Gabe Golob rounded out the Wake Forest arms. Crum struck out a pair in 1.2 innings of work while Wade and Golob pitched an inning a piece and gave up zero earned runs.

Overall, the Deacs have yet to surrender more than five runs in a single game this season.

How It Happened

  • The teams went down in order in the first, highlighted by a Teddy McGraw strikeout to end the bottom half of the inning..

    • McGraw induced a pair of ground outs for the first two outs of the frame.

  • Coastal Carolina struck first as the host took a 1-0 lead into the bottom half of the second as a batter was hit with the bases loaded.

    • McGraw struck out his second Chanticleer of the game before Danny Corona fielded a ground ball and turned a double play, stepping on second for the force out and firing the ball to first.

  • The Chanticleers added another run to take a 2-0 lead after three full innings.

    • A Coastal Carolina batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded with two outs.

    • McGraw forced a ground out to the lead off batter and forced the second out of the inning with runners on first and second as Brock Wilken fielded a ground ball and stepped on third.

    • Camden Minacci took over on the mound and forced a ground out to the first batter he faced to end the third.

  • After the Deacs went down in order to open the fourth, Minacci struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning.

  • Derek Crum hit the bump with one out in the bottom of the fifth and sat down consecutive batters to get out of a bases loaded jam.

    • A walk to the first batter of the frame loaded the bases with one out. Crum responded by striking out a Chanticleer before forcing a fly out to Tommy Hawke in center field to conclude the inning.

  • The Chanticleers tacked on a run with an RBI-single with one out in the bottom of the sixth, increasing their lead to 3-0. Wake Forest ended the inning as Brendan Tinsman caught a Coastal Carolina base runner trying to steal second immediately after Crum's second strikeout.

  • Adam Cecere and Corona reached base in the top of the eighth as the duo both tallied walks, but an interference call and lineout ended the inning.

  • Coastal Carolina added an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of singles, increasing their advantage to 4-0 after eight full frames.

    • Gabe Golob took over on the mound in the inning. With one out, the right hander forced a double play as Michael Turconi caught a pop up and fired the ball to first to get the Chanticleer base runner who was tagging.

  • Wake Forest rallied in the ninth with three runs on three hits, a walk, a hit batter, two stolen bases and an error. The Deacs placed runners on first and second with two outs after Tinsman was hit by a pitch. Coastal Carolina claimed the game with a strikeout to end Wake Forest's rally.

    • Jake Reinisch and Tommy Hawke started the rally with back-to-back base hits to open the frame.

    • A scoring on a fielding error by the Chanticleers (8-5) scored Reinisch and pushed Turconi to third base after a walk and stolen base.

    • After Brock Wilken stole second, Adam Cecere lasered a two-RBI single to right field to score Michael Turconi and Wilken.

Words from Walter
"It was a disappointing loss. Walks. Hit batters. We gave away too many runs against a good team. Obviously, we didn't get anything offensively until the ninth inning. I was proud of the way the guys battled and fought. We gave ourselves a chance to tie or win in the last inning. After the first eight innings, that's all we could ask for. We'll bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow."

On Deck
Wake Forest has a quick turnaround as the team will be right back on the diamond on Wednesday, March 9 against George Mason at David F. Couch Ballpark.

First pitch for the non-conference contest is set for 6 p.m. The game will be televised on ACC Network, marking the first of seven times the Deacs are on national television in 2022.
