Four Indoor Track Athletes Earned All-ACC Academic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Four members of the Wake Forest indoor track and field team have been named to the All-ACC Academic team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The four Deacs include graduate student Thomas Vanoppen, senior Andrew White, junior Emma Soderstrom and sophomore Thomas Kitchell.
"These student-athletes exemplify what it means to excel across all aspects of their lives," head coach John Hayes said. "The dedication and discipline they have demonstrated in their sport and in the classroom is something all Demon Deacons should aspire to."
Wake Forest's track and field team placed eight on the All-ACC First and Second Teams at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship. Emma Soderstrom, Thomas Kitchell, Chanel Dawson and Thomas Vanoppen earned First Team honors as Addison Berry, Tony Jones, Andrew White and Rynard Swanepoel earned Second Team honors, respectively.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in the selection process.

Thomas Kitchell
- Sophomore Kitchell captured his first All-ACC accolade at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships with his second place finish in the men's shot put with a toss of 19.45m. He set a new school record with the toss.
- Kitchell owns three top-three marks in school history.
- This is his first ACC Academic honor.
- Soderstrom finished third in the women's high jump at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, leaping for a mark of 1.78m.
- She owns the Wake Forest indoor high jump record of 1.82m.
- This is her first ACC Academic honor.
- Vanoppen finished third in the men's indoor mile at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, taking a time of 4:06.72.
- Vanoppen currently has the collegiate lead in the 1,500m event after he laid down a winning time of 3:38.34 at the Duke Invite. Not including the school record, his time broke the meet record and facility record.
- This is his first ACC Academic honor.
- White finished fifth in the men's weight throw at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, tossing a mark of 21.04m.
- White is currently sitting in three top-three positions in the Wake Forest record book.
- This is his second ACC Academic honor.
