Wake Forest Shuts Out High Point in Home Finale

5/11/2022 11:24:00 PM | Baseball

Eight Demon Deacon arms blanked the Panthers for Wake Forest’s 23rd non-conference victory of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team shutout High Point, 9-0, in its final home game of the 2022 regular season Wednesday inside David F. Couch Ballpark.

The Demon Deacons (34-14-1, 11-12-1 ACC) earned their 23rd non-conference victory of the season as eight arms combined to blank the Panthers (19-29, 10-8 Big South) for Wake Forest's first shutout since April 16, 2021.

Coming into midweek action, the Demon Deacons were tied for the best non-conference winning percentage in the nation at 92 percent.

Seth Keener improved his record to 4-1 on the season as the sophomore threw three innings with a trio of punchouts while allowing just two hits.

Jacob Grzebinski, Reed Mascolo and Derek Crum each tossed one inning a piece, highlighted by Crum's hitless outing in the top of the sixth.

In 1.2 innings, Eric Adler fanned four of the six batters he faced while Will Andrews struck out two Panthers in the top of the ninth to claim the midweek victory.

Offensively, the Demon Deacons got on the scoreboard in the top of the first as Brock Wilken and Michael Turconi tallied back-to-back doubles.

In the fourth, Wake Forest pushed across three runs, highlighted by an RBI-single from Wilken.

Danny Corona (fifth) and Lucas Costello's (seventh) plated runs with two-out RBI base hits. The Deacs also pushed across three runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to nine runs.

Nick Kurtz tallied the first collegiate triple in the inning to get the scoring started before an RBI-groundout from Adam Cecere scored the game's final run.

Overall, the trio of Wilken, Corona and Brendan Tinsman led the Deacs with two base hits apiece.

How It Happened

  • Seth Keener made his 10th start of the season, tossing a hitless top of the first inning with a groundout and double play.

  • Wake Forest struck first as Brock Wilken and Michael Turconi tallied back-to-back doubles. Turconi's eighth double of the season scored Wilken and gave the Deacs an early one-run lead.

  • Keener tossed another scoreless inning in the top of the second as Tommy Hawke caught a runner trying to score from second base on a base hit to preserve the Demon Deacon 1-0 lead.

  • Keener came back and tossed his third-straight scoreless inning, highlighted by his third punch out for the final out of the inning.

  • Wake Forest held onto their 1-0 advantage as Jacob Grzebinski worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout and a groundout back to the mound.

  • The Deacs extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on two hits and a passed ball.

    • Cecere (hit by pitch) started the scoring as a passed ball plated the outfielder.

    • Hawke beat out a throw to score Jake Reinisch (double) for the second run of the inning before Wilken tallied an RBI-single, scoring Danny Corona (walk).

  • Reed Mascolo hit the mound in the top of the fifth and kept High Point off the scoreboard with a strikeout, fly out and another assist from Tommy Hawke. Hawke threw out a base runner trying to advance to third to end the frame.

  • A two-out RBI-single from Danny Corona pushed the Demon Deacon lead to 5-0 in the bottom half of the inning.

    • Brendan Tinsman notched a leadoff single and stole second following a pair of strikeouts before scoring on Costello's base knock.

  • Derek Crum struck out a pair in a hitless sixth inning as Wake Forest continued to hold a five-run advantage.

  • Eric Adler kept the momentum in the top of the seventh, tossing a scoreless frame with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.

  • The Deacs got another timely hit from Lucas Costello with two outs to add a run in the bottom of the inning, increasing their lead to 6-0.

    • Costello's RBI-single scored Cecere, who walked.

    • Wake Forest loaded the bases later in the inning as Corona singled and Hawke walked.

  • Adler returned in the eighth and fanned the first two batters of the frame before Crawford Wade induced the final out of the inning.

  • Wake Forest extended their lead to 9-0 as Kurtz tallied a two-RBI triple down the right field line and Cecere notched an RBI-groundout in the bottom of the inning.

  • Will Andrews took over with two Panthers on base and nobody out in the top of the ninth. The Winston-Salem native fanned two batters to clinch the 9-0 victory.

Standout Stat
Wake Forest has been patient at the plate as the Deacs have been walked 312 times, the most in the ACC and the second most in the entire nation. They added nine walks to that total on Wednesday night.

This marks the second-most by a Demon Deacon squad in program history and is just nine walks away from setting another program record this season:

Most Walks In A Season

  1. 320 (2019)

  2. 312 (2022)

  3. 308 (2016, 1988)

  4. 306 (2017)

  5. 304 (1990)

Words From Walter
"Any win is a good win at this point of the year. Any time you shut someone out, that's a good job by your pitching staff. Defensively, we did a couple of good things today. Tommy Hawke threw out two guys on the bases. We turned a big double play with nobody out in the second inning. We didn't have great at-bats today, but we certainly did enough to punch across some runs. We did a good job with two outs. We had three two-out RBIs. We had a couple walks with two outs to extend innings. While it wasn't a great offensive performance, we found a way to score nine runs, which is always a good thing.

"Who knows what is going to happen this weekend. The weather on Friday doesn't look great so it was good to get some guys in there. It was good to get Chris Katz an at-bat. He put a good swing on it. Kyle Joye put a good swing on it late. Gio got in there in the ninth and caught. We got a bunch of pitchers a touch today. The story today, other than getting a win, was Eric Adler. It was really good to see him go out there and be his old self. It's kind of like getting a late-season trade. I told him when I went out to the mound, 'it's like we made a trade and picked up an elite closer.' It's a huge pickup for us. I'm really happy with Ads. He persevered through this and got through the rocky part and has come out the other side and he's a better pitcher and person for it. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do down the stretch."

On Deck
