SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Wake Forest women's golf team began Championship play in 20mph winds on their back nine to finish the first day in the top 12, coming in at T12.
Freshman Carolina Chacarra was the low Deac of the day, leading the team at T27 on the leaderboard. After a tough start, she quickly rebounded with three birdies over her next 10 holes. She approached the 15th tee at one under but ran into some tough conditions in the wind on the final stretch. She parred her final hole of the day to finish the first round at three over.
The Deacs led the field with 60 pars across five players in the first round. They also recorded nine birdies. Lauren Walsh, Mimi Rhodes and Virunpat Olankitkunchai recorded 13 pars each during their first rounds, the third-most of individual players.
Second Round
Saturday's second round will begin at 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time. Wake Forest will tee off the 10th hole beginning at 6:30 in 11-minute intervals and will be paired with San Jose State and Oklahoma State. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat and a full recap with results will be posted to GoDeacs.com at the conclusion of the round.
Coach's Comments
"The course conditions were tough today. We had a nice stretch through the middle but once we got into the back nine the wind really picked up. We have an earlier tee time tomorrow so the conditions should be a bit calmer, and we'll be able to make up some ground. We know how to put ourselves in good positions and we know how to go low. We'll get some rest tonight and be ready to get after it tomorrow." – associate head coach Ryan Potter
