Three Demon Deacons in Hunt at PGA Championship

Wake Forest is looking to become the first school since the 2019 PGA Championship to place three players inside of the top 10 at a major tournament.
TULSA, Okla. – Heading into the final round of the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., three Demon Deacons sit inside of the top 10 on the leaderboard.
Wake Forest is looking to become the first school since the 2019 PGA Championship to place three players inside of the top 10 at a major tournament. During that PGA Championship, three players from Arizona State finished inside of the top 10.
After a strong third round in tough conditions, Cameron Young battled himself to within four strokes of the lead with 18 holes remaining. The Demon Deacon 2019 and 2018 All-American was one of the few players on the course to be under par on Saturday.
For the tournament, he sits at 5-under-par and tied for fourth on the leaderboard. Young will be paired with former Wake Forest teammate Will Zalatoris in the second to last group to go off Sunday afternoon.
Zalatoris sits one stroke above Young and is tied for second in the field and just two strokes off the lead. The entire week he has been inside of the top two at the end of each round and has been within at least two strokes of the lead.
Additionally, Zalatoris was the 36-hole leader at 9-under-par, leading by one stroke headed into the weekend. In the previous four PGA Championship hosted at Southern Hills Country Club, the 36-hole leader has claimed the title
Like Young, PGA Tour veteran Webb Simpson had an impressive day, going from making the cut line on the nose to inside of the top 10. Simpson carded the lowest round on the course Saturday, turning in a 65 (-5) that helped him rise up 54 spots on the leaderboard.
If he were to bring home the Wanamaker Trophy, he would become the first player in the modern era of the PGA Tour to make the cut by one stroke and go on to win the tournament.
His highest finish at a PGA Championship came in 2016 when he tied for 13th. Simpson is looking for his sixth top-10 finish at a major in his career which includes winning the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club.
