Carolyn Campana Advances to Round of 32 in NCAA Individual Championships

The Wake Forest senior delivered an impressive come-from-behind performance on Monday night.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Being the first Wake Forest women's tennis individual to compete during the 2022 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, Carolyn Campana started the week off strong for the Black and Old Gold. The senior battled through a gritty singles matchup against Mila Saric of William and Mary to hang on for a first-round win (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).

The feat allowed Campana to advance to the tournament's Round of 32 for the first time in her Demon Deacon career. Her next test will be versus No. 49 Kylie Collins (Texas) on Tuesday (May 24).

Campana's win marked the second consecutive year that Wake Forest has had a solo player reach the second round of the NCAA Championships' individual section. Campana's younger sister, Anna, did so last year, defeating LSU's Taylor Bridges in straight sets.

Fighting back in the midway point of her opening set, Campana evened the board at 3-3 after winning a pair of games. However, the senior would be unable to hold on through the next three games, dropping the first frame.

Campana had an ideal start to the second set, quickly winning three games. A few rallies were traded through the next stretch, but the Deacon standout ultimately finished victorious to force a third period.

The evening's final set began tightly-played, sitting at a 2-2 score. Back-and-forth play continued before a big ninth game by Campana, leading by one. Strong swings helped her complete the deed in a poised fashion (6-4).
