Five Deacs will compete in Champaign this week.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – As team postseason play concludes, Wake Forest will have a quintet of its players partake in individual action during the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships this week, held in Champaign, Illinois.
For the second consecutive year, five Demon Deacons will represent the Black and Old Gold. Senior Carolyn Campana landed a spot in singles while Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth and Samantha Martinelli/Casie Wooten made up pairs in doubles. Combined, this is only the second time within program history that Wake Forest has had five or more players play in the NCAA Championships' individual section. Each player earned an at-large bid.
Competition will take place May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex, with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign acting as the host institution. Live streaming and live stats for each contest in the NCAA Championships will be provided through the TennisOne App.
All matches will function as best-of-three sets. A seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
Campana has maintained a national ranking throughout the spring's entirety, most recently moving her way to No. 32 in ITA singles. The senior is headed to her second-straight NCAA postseason singles appearance and has led Wake Forest with six wins over ranked opponents this year.
Brylin and Killingsworth stand at No. 5 in ITA doubles, holding the highest ranking of a Wake Forest pair this late in a season since Janet Bergman/Bea Bielik in 2002. The duo leads Wake Forest with a 15-5 record, including six wins over ranked opposing pairs. Brylin and Killingsworth are currently on a six-match winning streak. Likewise to Campana, this will be their second NCAA showing in a row.
Second on the squad in doubles victories are Martinelli and Wooten, with a 12-7 record. The two have held a spot in the ITA Top-50 for the majority of the season, while going 4-1 over ranked competition and winning three of their last four matchups. Heading into the event, for their first career appearance, Martinelli and Wooten rank No. 27 in doubles, nationally.
