A first look at Wake Forest’s next campaign.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With the spring semester officially in the books, Wake Forest volleyball has unveiled its fall slate schedule for the 2022 season, announced on Tuesday (May 24).
The full schedule can be found here.
"I feel we have a strong schedule ahead of us, and I know our team and staff are all looking forward to getting back in the gym," said head coach Randi Smart. "The conference will be strong again, fast-paced and consisting of opponents who are looking to come back better than last year. Knowing that, we want to make sure we face challenges early in the season. There will be some well-trained and talented teams on our plate from August until November. We simply cannot wait."
A hosted invitational through two days starts up the fall for the Demon Deacons, as they will first match up with North Carolina Central on August 26 in the opener before competing against Western Carolina and Kennesaw State the following day.
Wake Forest then travels to nearby Chapel Hill for a neutral site meeting with the Arizona Wildcats (Sept. 2). Afterwards, the team will immediately return to its own gym and bring in South Carolina (Sept. 3). A week later, Wake Forest will participate in a tournament held on Texas State's grounds (Sept. 10-11). Opponents throughout the weekend include Ole Miss, Sam Houston State and the host Bobcats.
A final weekend of non-conference competition for the Deacons takes place in mid-September at a UNC Charlotte invitational. A test versus Davidson comes first (Sept. 16) before Wake Forest faces the host 49ers (Sept. 17).
The Deacs begin Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play on the road near the end of September, visiting Georgia Tech (Sept. 23) and Clemson (Sept. 25).
Fans should mark their calendars for the team's conference home opener on Sept. 30, when Syracuse comes to Winston-Salem. The match will be followed by three more consecutive appearances at home versus Boston College, North Carolina and North Carolina State.
Two weeks spent away from its home floor make up October's midsection for Wake Forest. The group is set to first take trips to Notre Dame (Oct. 14) and Louisville (Oct. 16) before heading South to Miami (Oct. 21) and Florida State (Oct. 23).
Returning to Reynolds Gymnasium, the Deacs have a challenge on Oct. 28, hosting Pittsburgh. Another home match, against Virginia, closes out the month of October.
Wake Forest's final three weeks of the regular season include facing Duke and Virginia Tech twice in a two-week stretch. After a visit to Virginia on Nov. 20, the Deacs will hold 'Senior Day' five days later, with Clemson as the opponent (Nov. 25).
Wake Forest produced a record of 15-14 overall (6-12 in the ACC) last fall, tallying its first winning season since 2010. The Deacons ranked in the conference's top five in service aces (1.42/set). Standout setter Andrea Fuentes recorded 35 of those, along with a 10.15 assists-per-set average that stood fourth-best among ACC individuals. On the defensive side, Kalani Whillock tied for the ACC lead in digs per set (4.19) during her first season with the Black and Old Gold.
