Wake Forest Reaches 40 Wins; Defeats Miami 16-3 in Seven Innings to Cap Off ACC Tournament

5/27/2022 7:31:00 PM | Baseball

The Friday afternoon victory helped Wake Forest become the first squad since 2017 to reach 40 wins and earn the Demon Deacons’ seventh 40-win season in program history.

CHARLOTTE- The Wake Forest baseball team finished the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament with a dominant 16-3 victory in seven innings over Miami on Friday afternoon inside Truist Field.

The 13-run victory helped Wake Forest (40-17-1) become the first squad since 2017 to reach 40 wins and post the Demon Deacons' seventh 40-win season in program history. With that, the Deacs have increased their win total by 20 games from last season (40 wins to 20 wins), the largest year-to-year turnaround in program history.

Additionally, today's victory marked the Demon Deacons' seventh win over a top-15 opponent this season.

Wake Forest's 16 runs were fueled by 15 hits and seven home runs, tying an ACC Tournament record set by last year's Louisville's squad.

The offensive explosion was the most runs scored in an ACC Tournament game by Wake Forest since 2005 (20 runs vs. Maryland) and the 23rd game of the season the Demon Deacons notched double-double hits and runs.

Adam Cecere launched two round trippers, his third multi-home run performance of the season. Nick Kurtz, Brendan Tinsman, Jake Reinisch, Brock Wilken and Lucas Costello also notched home runs to help tie the tournament record.

Wilken, Cecere and Reinisch fired back-to-back-to-back home runs with two outs in the top of the sixth, the first time since April 27, 2021 three-straight Demon Deacons went yard. Wilken, who also launched a home run against NC State on Tuesday, hit a solo home run 441 feet for his 21st home run of the season.

Kurtz's three-run blast to extend Wake Forest's lead to 5-1 in the top of the third put the Lancaster, Pa. native into a tie for second all time on the Demon Deacon freshman home run list. Additionally, Tinsman inched closer to rewriting the Wake Forest record book with his three-run home run in the top of the fourth. The Cape Elizabeth, Maine native is now just one home run away from tying the single-season home run record.

Rhett Lowder, the 2022 ACC Pitcher of the Year, earned his 11th win of the season as the sophomore became just the fifth pitcher in program history and the first Demon Deacon in 20 years (Kyle Sleeth, 2002) to reach 11 victories in a season.

The Albemarle, N.C. native has not allowed more than three earned runs in any appearance this season.

Teddy McGraw pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Lowder, striking out a trio of Hurricanes while walking just one.

Overall, Cecere went a perfect 4-4 at the plate, while Tinsman led Wake Forest with a career-high tying four RBIs. Michael Turconi posted three hits and three RBIs, while Kurtz, Wilken and Cecere joined the group with multiple-runs driven in.

How It Happened

  • Michael Turconi notched an one-out single up the middle for Wake Forest's first base runner of the game. A double play ended the top of the first.

  • A leadoff home run gave Miami a 1-0 lead after the first full inning of play. Lowder responded with his first strikeout of the game before inducing a fly out to right field. After a two-out single, Lowder forced an inning-ending groundout.

  • Wake Forest placed a pair on base with one out as Brock Wilken was hit by a pitch and Adam Cecere singled to right field. A strikeout and foul out ended the top of the second.

  • Lowder responded with a scoreless second, highlighted by a strike out and throw out by Brendan Tinsman for the first two outs of the inning.

    • This marked Tinsman's 13th time throwing out a base runner trying to steal, an ACC best.

  • Wake Forest's offense exploded for six runs in the top of the third with a two-RBI single from Turconi, a three-run home run from Nick Kurtz and a solo shot courtesy of Adam Cecere

    • Lucas Costello (single), Pierce Bennett (double) all reached to open up the inning and scored on Turconi's two-run base knock.

    • Tinsman continued the hot streak with a single through the right side. Kurtz's 15th home run of the season scored Tinsman and Turconi.

  • Miami got one run back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI-groundout, trimming Wake Forest's lead to 6-2. Lowder struck out his third batter of the game and induced a ground out to Danny Corona at second base to end the inning.

  • Brendan Tinsman launched a three-run home run over the left field wall to extend Wake Forest's lead to 9-2 after the top of the fourth.

    • Costello and Turconi, who were both hit by a pitch, were brought home on Tinsman's 23rd home run of the season.

  • The Deacs held onto their seven-run lead (9-2) as Lowder threw a hitless bottom of the fourth with a pair of fly outs and a ground out.

  • Miami tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth with another RBI-groundout with two outs. Lowder fanned his fourth batter of the game to strand a runner on third.

  • Wake Forest launched back-to-back-to-back home runs with two outs for a total of four runs in the top of the sixth, increasing their lead to 13-3.

  • Teddy McGraw took over on the mound and tossed a scoreless bottom of the sixth, striking out the first batter he faced before Wake Forest turned a double play to end the inning.

  • Costello hit a leadoff home run over the left field wall before Turconi notched an RBI-triple, scoring Bennett (walk). Turconi was brought home on an RBI-groundout by Tinsman as the Demon Deacons took a 16-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

  • McGraw clinched the 16-3 victory in the bottom half of the inning, fanning the first batter he faced before working around a two-out double and walk with his third strikeout of his outing.

Coach's Comments
"I'm really proud of our guys. We talked today, it's been quite a while since Wake Forest has won 40 games. For what was supposed to be a meaningless game, it was anything but that for our team. I'm really proud of the response of several of our players. Adam, who's sitting up here next to me, I pinch hit for him with a chance to win the game on Tuesday. Whether it's the right move or wrong move, the only thing he can control is his response and he did that today and he put us on his back doing it. I'm happy to get the win and we'll regroup and get ready for hopefully a good Monday and see what happens." - associate head coach Bill Cilento
