Good Morning Demon Deacon Nation!
Happy New (Fiscal) Year! As we get ready to celebrate America on the 4th of July, we are also turning the page to a new fiscal and academic year at Wake Forest University even as we continue to celebrate the accomplishments outlined in my last edition of From the Quad,
Thanks to the dedication of the entire Demon Deacon Nation and the hard work of your loyal Deacon Club staff, we are closing the books and tallying the results of your generosity and will have a great final report of FY22 to share with you later this month. Meanwhile, our staff and coaches are right back at it preparing to welcome another new group of Wake Forest student-athletes on Tuesday, July 5 with summer school session II getting underway. And, exactly two months from today, we'll be gathered for Opening Night at Truist Field as the nationally ranked Demon Deacons begin their quest for ACC supremacy and a seventh-straight bowl season!
But first, today we are pleased to unveil the DEACTOWN Marketplace!
In keeping with our vision of a Model Intercollegiate Athletics Program, our Wake Forest Athletics staff has strived over the last several years to be on the forefront of creating unique initiatives to help our young men and women in the ever-evolving world of Name Image and Likeness (NIL).
Since 2020, Wake Forest has collaborated with Opendorse to help student-athletes build their personal brands and provide assessments, education, and performance solutions. Additionally, our staff continues to work with our colleagues across campus including Wake Forest's innovative Office of Career and Personal Development (OPCD) on career discovery, financial literacy and other programs as resources for our student-athletes.
The DEACTOWN Marketplace, in collaboration with Opendorse will be a new tool to help Wake Forest student-athletes grow their individual brands while easily, and compliantly, exploring NIL opportunities.
If your company or organization would like to consider engaging with a Demon Deacon student-athlete in an internship, sponsorship or other NIL related activity, I encourage you to click this link to connect, examine, and propose potential partnerships with student-athletes through their Opendorse profiles.
Our staff is working hard to get our 400-plus student-athletes loaded into the platform, and in the coming weeks, you will see many more Demon Deacons in the DEACTOWN Marketplace!
You may remember Wake Forest men's soccer player alum and NCAA Champion Julian Valentin ('07). He is now head of brand and athlete marketing at Opendorse and recently came to campus to spend time assisting in the onboarding process and educating our student-athletes on NIL best practices.
Please contact Barry Faircloth (fairclbw@wfu.edu), Mike Piscetelli (piscetmf@wfu.edu), Arin Dunn (dunna@wfu.edu), me (wfuad@wfu.edu) or any member of our staff with any questions or for more information.
Big Football Slate in 2022 With New ACC Schedule Model Coming in 2023
I'm fired up to see Deacon Nation inside Truist Field on Thursday, Sept. 1. Based on our outstanding ticket sales, you are too! Please continue to invite your friends, neighbors, old roommates and business associates to make plans now - and remember the 'One More Rule!' Each Deacon fan attending one more game this year than they did last season means a packed Truist Field for our high-scoring football team and the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina.
Earlier this week the Atlantic Coast Conference announced a new four year football schedule model to begin in 2023. The new 3-5-5 model means that we will play every school in the conference at least twice in the four year period, as opposed to the divisional model which had us scheduled to play six ACC teams, including traditional opponents like North Carolina and Virginia, only twice in 12 years.
We look forward to a greater variety of matchups in Truist Field as well as playing Duke, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech annually. With 12 student-athletes from Georgia and 11 current players from Virginia, having the Yellow Jackets and Hokies as primary opponents makes geographic sense and is great for our student-athletes and their families. With a strong alumni and fan presence in both the Atlanta area and throughout Virginia, and Blacksburg being a short drive, we will have a strong presence in the stands at both Bobby Dodd Stadium and Lane Stadium.
For the Demon Deacons, it's disappointing to give up playing NC State every year as we have since 1910. But, we are guaranteed to play two Big 4 opponents every season and I believe the new model is a definite improvement over the previous iteration. I am appreciative of Commissioner Jim Phillips and senior associate commissioner Michael Strickland for leading the AD's through this process.
As you can imagine, while we work together to continue to elevate ACC football, all 14 schools have individual needs and preferences and it's impossible for each school to get everything exactly as they wish. And, as evidenced by yesterday's conference realignment news, strong intraconference collaboration is more important than ever as we navigate these unchartered waters together.
Wake Forest's 400-plus student-athletes benefit daily from the generosity of over 5,000 Demon Deacon alumni, parents, friends and fans who provide scholarships, sports medicine, academic and mental health support, world-class facilities and more! Thank you for your investments that allow Wake Forest to continue to provide a World Class Student-Athlete Experience for all Demon Deacons. As always, I appreciate the feedback, questions and suggestions you send to wfuad@wfu.edu.
Enjoy your 4th of July weekend, stay safe, and …
Go Deacs!
