Good Evening Demon Deacon Nation!

Whew! It's been an incredible 2021-22 athletics year culminating this past weekend with five Demon Deacons in Eugene, Oregon at the NCAA track and field championships. The Deacs were led by ACC Champion Thomas Vanoppen whose fourth place finish in the 1,500 meter final earned him First Team All-America honors. Additionally, Zach Facioni, Tony Jones, Anna Bush and Emma Soderstrom all merited All-America distinctions! And yesterday head coach John Hayes was recognized for his expertise as he was named to Team USATF's coaching staff for the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships later this summer in Columbia.

Remarkably, every Demon Deacon spring team reached NCAA play and won a game, match or advanced on from regional competition to nationals. To have 14 of our 18 programs qualify for postseason action, while also adding two more championships to our 55 ACC team titles, is a credit to our coaches and student-athletes as it reflects the University-wide commitment to our vision of being A Model Intercollegiate Athletics Program and achieving the five core goals we first unveiled way back on Aug. 7, 2019. Collectively, we were 31-30-1 against our Big 4 rivals this academic year and we swept the Wolfpack in football, men's basketball and baseball in regular season action!

However before anyone thinks that we're just sitting around reminiscing about big wins and polishing trophies, be assured we have already engaged in full scale preparation for 2022-23.

Over the last few weeks we have welcomed new and returning student-athletes to campus for orientations and summer classes, pre-competition physicals, workouts and training sessions. Believe me, their enthusiasm is contagious! We have made a few stops around DEACTOWN-USA as Coach Megan Gebbia and Coach Steve Forbes were in Greensboro last week. And, it was really cool to see Demon Deacons Rachel Kuehn, Emilia Migliaccio and Lauren Walsh competing in the Curtis Cup over the weekend.

Meanwhile our operations, fan experience and facilities folks are gearing up for a big month of August! From our first women's soccer exhibition game on Friday, Aug. 12 through Aug. 28, we will host 18 (!) field hockey, soccer and volleyball matches at Spry Stadium, Kentner Stadium and Varsity Arena in Reynolds Gym. And then, it will be time for…

Deacon Club Accelerating to the End of Another Strong Year
Wake Forest's 400-plus student-athletes benefit daily from the generosity of over 5,000 Wake Forest alumni, parents, friends and fans who provide scholarships, sports medicine, academic and mental health support, world-class facilities and more!

As I write this, Wake Forest Athletics is just 185 donors away from setting a new record for most gifts for different supporters in a single year. Deacon Club members are helping drive the success we have seen on and off the field. Additionally, we are closing in on the $4 million mark in gifts towards our women's programs as we continue celebrating the 50th Year of Women's Athletics at Wake Forest, Presented by Blue Cross NC.

We are closing in on another extraordinary impactful drive with only a few weeks remaining until the 2022 fiscal year deadline of June 30! If you are able to help, please visit the Deacon Club website today!  If you have any questions about giving or the Deacon Club, do not hesitate to reach out to deacclub@wfu.edu or call 336-758-5626.

From the Quad Big 3
Here are today's Big 3 ways to help the Deacs:
  1. Stayed tuned to GoDeacs.com on Juneteenth this weekend as we have a special Deacon Sports Xtra with some of our student-athlete perspectives. Head down to Innovation Quarter on Saturday as Triad Cultural Art, Inc. will have exhibits, community events and other unique and engaging activities from 1-8 p.m. for the entire community.
  2. Help me congratulate new assistant coaches Emily Stallings and Nikki Flores and continuing graduate manager Nia Randall, as Coach Megan Gebbia announced her first three hires last Thursday. They have hit the ground running in building relationships with our young women and practices focused on fundamentals and competition!
  3. Click here to read about where our student-athletes and programs ranked in their community service through Helper Helper. Overall, Wake Forest ranked 12th in the country across all sports!
From back-to-back sellouts inside Truist Field to end our home football schedule to watch our ACC Atlantic Division and Gator Bowl Champion gridiron Deacs, to the renaissance of our beloved men's basketball program as our student-athletes tied the single-season program record for ACC wins with 13 (2004-05, 2002-03) and home victories with 16 (2004-05, 2002-03), to our men's and women's golf programs capturing both ACC crowns and record-breaking seasons and moments in baseball, men's soccer, women's soccer, women's track & field, volleyball, cross country, men's tennis, women's tennis, field hockey and women's basketball, it has been a truly special year. I am grateful for our 195 staff members and coaches who have worked together to persevere through the vestiges of COVID-19 to compete in over 300 events.

Finally, here's an early Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there. Please pray for peace, and as always, please continue to send your thoughts, ideas and suggestions to me at wfuad@wfu.edu.

Happy Pride Month, and Go Deacs!
