WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the final home match of the season, the Wake Forest volleyball team defeated the Boston College Eagles 3-0 to win on Senior Day and send their three seniors out on a high note.
The Demon Deacons (15-12, 6-10 ACC) won both their matches this season over Boston College (15-16, 5-12 ACC) marking the first time Wake Forest has swept the Eagles since 2010. The win also clinched the program's first winning season since 2010.
Olivia Franke led the Deacs on the net with five solo blocks and six total blocks. McSweeney and Malloy were right behind her with five and four blocks, respectively. Defensively, Malloy led the Deacs with 14 digs and freshman Kalani Whillock tallied ten.
How It Happened
In the first set, Wake Forest and Boston College traded points. After the Deacons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, both teams traded points. Neither the Deacs nor Eagles had more than a two-point lead until a McSweeney kill that gave the Deacs an 8-6 lead. Midway through the first set, the Deacs went on a 3-0 run to go up 14-9 and put a five-point wedge between them and the Eagles. The five-point advantage was enough to take the first set. The Deacons and Eagles continued to battle in the second set. The Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Wake Forest tied it up at 3-3. Both teams traded points until the Eagles went on a 5-1 run in the middle of the set to make it 16-11 in their favor. After the timeout, the Deacs went on a run of their own. Led by Kendall Phillips, Wake Forest took the next five of six points to trail 17-16. Three quick Eagle points extended their lead but Wake Forest responded with a 9-2 run to take the set, 25-22.
