Wake Forest Drops Four Set Match at Miami

11/24/2021 6:34:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Wake Forest volleyball (15-13, 6-11 ACC) suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Miami Hurricanes (24-4, 15-3 ACC) on Wednesday afternoon in South Florida. The Hurricanes snapped the Demon Deacons two-match win streak with their victory.

Wake Forest was led by Kamryn Malloy with a match-high 19 kills. Overall, four Demon Deacons tallied double-digit kills in the match as Ashley Slater (15) Olivia Franke (11) and Delaney McSweeney (10) followed Malloy in the offensive attack.

The Wake Forest offense was paced by Andrea Fuentes and her 54 assists. Following her great output on Wednesday, Fuentes surpassed 1,000 assists on the season and is only 68 short of entering into the top-15 all-time for assists in a single season in program history.

Defensively, Kalani Whillock tallied a match-high 29 digs to bring her season total to over 400. Franke and McSweeney recorded two total blocks each in the match.

How It Happened

Wake Forest and Miami began the first set by trading points until it was knotted at four apiece. The Demon Deacons were able to tie the match again at nine following an Ashley Slater kill. A 6-2 run by the Hurricanes put them up 15-11 midway through the first set, but the Deacs responded. Wake Forest put together a quick 5-0 run to take the lead, 16-15. Score ties defined the second half of the first set before Wake Forest ultimately took the first set, 28-26.

In set two, the Hurricanes responded. Miami controlled the second set after jumping out to a quick 6-3 lead. The Deacons got to within one point of the Hurricanes on three different occasions, but could not overcome the Canes. Miami took set two 25-21.

In the third set, Miami jumped out to a 4-0 lead and the Deacs tried to battle the rest of the way. After a Kamryn Malloy kill brought the Deacs to within one at 9-8, the teams traded points through the middle of the third set. Kills by Ashley Slater and Delaney McSweeney kept Wake Forest within reach of Miami before the Hurricanes went on a 6-3 run to secure the third set victory, 25-19.

In the final set, Wake Forest and Miami battled through the first few points. An Ashley Slater kill brought the Deacs to within one of Miami (6-5) but much like the second set, Wake Forest could not overcome the deficit. Wake Forest fought to get within two points one other time during the set. Miami ultimately took the fourth set, 25-21.

Coach's Comments

"Miami is a very good team and we liked some of our matchups coming into this game. We had some great opportunities to score but didn't quite take advantage of them all. I am proud of our passing as of late, it continues to keep us steady. We are looking forward to getting back on the court on Friday against a good Virginia Tech team" -Head Coach, Randi Smart

Up Next

Wake Forest will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia to close out the regular season at Virginia Tech. The Deacs will play the Hokies on Friday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. in Blacksburg.
