How It Happened
Set one began with both teams trading points until the 3-3 mark. After a 4-1 run by the Hokies, Wake Forest called a timeout in order to try and stop the Hokie momentum. The Deacs, trailing 7-4 after the timeout, did all they could to catch up throughout the rest of the set but couldn't overcome the deficit. The Deacs dropped the first set, 25-21.
The Deacons jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the second set after an Olivia Franke kill but was met with a small Hokie run to tie it up at four. The Deacs and Hokies then began to trade points and were tied at the five, six, seven and eight marks before an 8-2 Virginia Tech run put them up 16-10. An Olivia Franke kill ended the Hokie run, making it 16-11 Virginia Tech. It wasn't enough to stop the Hokie momentum all together. The Deacs went back-and-forth with Virginia Tech down the stretch but ultimately fell, 25-18.
In the third set, Wake Forest found itself in a hole in the early goings down 4-1. The Deacs tied it back up at four before two straight Hokie points gave them the advantage, 6-4. The teams then exchanged points until an Ashley Slater kill tied the third set at 13-13. A Chloe Wilson kill gave the Deacs the lead 14-13 and Wake Forest didn't look back. Wake Forest closed out the decisive third set outscoring Virginia Tech 11-9 down the stretch to take the third set, 25-22.
Looking to build on their third set victory, Wake Forest held a one point advantage until a 7-7 tie. Virginia Tech then began to separate themselves from the Deacs despite multiple Deacon attempts to equalize the set. Wake Forest came within one point of tying the set on eight separate occasions but fell short. Virginia Tech won the fourth set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
Coach's Comments
"We started the match slow and quiet and we never rebounded afterwards. We didn't control our side of the court well and it cost us."
"I am very proud of the work our seniors have put into this program. Peyton and Abby for four years and Kam for one. They have been selfless and have given so much to the team and their teammates. I am proud to be a part of their lives." -Head Coach, Randi Smart
