EUGENE, Ore. – Graduate student Thomas Vanoppen capped off a tremendous year with a fourth place finish at the 1500-meter final on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Vanoppen wrapped up an incredibly successful season, earning First Team All-America honors after finishing fourth in the 1500-meter final Friday night. He is the first Wake Forest outdoor All-American since Robert Heppenstall in 2018 and the first 1500-meter All-American since Kyle Graves in 2015, second 1500-meter All-American in school history.
The Year of Vanoppen
Tony Jones finished T-19th in the high jump, leaping for a 2.10m (6-10¾) and was named All-American Honorable Mention.
Anna Bush rounded out four events of the heptathlon action on Friday, putting herself in 18th place overall. She has scored 3277 points with her best finish in the high jump, tying her personal best 1.72m and adding 879 points. She will finish out the heptathlon tomorrow starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.
QUOTE FROM DIRECTOR OF TRACK AND FIELD JOHN HAYES
"We've finished the men's meet but we still have Emma (Soderstrom) and Anna (Bush) tomorrow. Today we struggled with tactics but not with effort and character. When a Wake Forest track athlete competes, I feel confident that I will get incredible effort. Today did not disappoint. Thomas (Vanoppen) had an incredible last 600 meters after getting caught in bad position. He went from about 10th to 4th in the last 100m."
"Tony (Jones) didn't have his best day but he has done such a nice job coming off of a fall where he was injured and had a tough time practicing. He's battled back to become an All-American honorable mention. I'm so proud of him. Zach (Facioni) was injured throughout indoors and has barely raced since his All-American performance in cross country. He raced with a ton of toughness. Great comeback this season. Anna (Bush) struggled in a few events today but as she's done in the past, I anticipate her to come out and compete hard in the long jump, javelin and 800m."
