Good Morning Demon Deacon Nation!
Three weeks into the semester there is a great energy in DEACTOWN as we continue to persevere together. Our students are enjoying in-person classes with world class Wake Forest faculty, and the extended community is experiencing big-time ACC basketball inside Joel Coliseum! There's also been some high level action in the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center - come catch first serve at 5 p.m. today as our No. 10 ranked men's tennis team hosts No. 16 Michigan.
A big thank you is due to the women and men of Wake Forest's outstanding Facilities & Campus Services unit for their hard work over the last couple weeks dealing with the winter weather so our students, faculty and staff could safely traverse our snowy Reynolda Campus! Their efforts literally helped clear the way for a memorable University community moment on Hearn Plaza last Saturday night following our big men's basketball victory over the Tar Heels. It was awesome to see Coach Steve Forbes celebrate the win on the Quad with our students, but even more impressive for his squad to display their resolve and come back 48 hours later after an emotional win and dominate Boston College on Monday to earn their fourth-straight victory!
Did you know that the Deacs now have the most overall wins (17) and are tied with Miami for the most conference wins (7) in the entire Atlantic Coast Conference? Tune in Saturday at 8 p.m. on ACC Network as the Deacs take the floor at Syracuse!
When we welcomed Coach Forbes and his family to Wake Forest 21 months ago, he talked about developing tough teams that play together and share the basketball. Impressively, he's already built a squad that is doing just that. In winning our last three ACC games by 15-plus points each for the first time since the 2004-05 season, the Deacs are earning national attention and firing up the Wake Forest faithful with incredible passes to three-point shooters and high-flying slam dunks from a host of players including ACC Player of the Year candidate Alondes Williams!
Alondes is vying to become the first player in conference history to lead the ACC in scoring (20.4) and assists (5.1) in the same year. Meanwhile, veteran Isaiah Mucius, who has played in every game over the past four years and is currently 11th in the conference in three-pointers made, Jake LaRavia, who is the reigning ACC Player of the Week, and Daivien Williamson, who has the potential to become the 13th player in NCAA history since the 1992-93 season to average 50% shooting from the field, 40% shooting from behind the three-point arc, and 90% from the free throw line in the same season, may get the most publicity or minutes, but Coach Forbes has a deep team with multiple players who can impact the game and help the Deacons win on any given night.
There's only five more chances to see this fun group inside LJVM Coliseum starting with our next home game on Wednesday, Feb. 2 against Pitt at 7 p.m. Single game tickets start at just $25 and our popular four-pack ticket + parking package begins at $129. We all know a friend, neighbor or colleague who has not been to the Joel for a long time – grab them and bring them with you on Wednesday so they can experience the awakening of Demon Deacons basketball! Stay tuned to GoDeacs.com and our social media platforms for more fan engagement initiatives.
Before we get to the rest of the updates, I want to express my appreciation to all fans for their adherence and understanding as we implemented our proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative-test protocol for all indoor athletics events, AND still bringing incredible energy and enthusiasm to help Demon Deacons student-athletes compete at the highest level!
With that said, we did make a decision to postpone the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony planned for next month to the fall of 2022. Hall of Fame induction is a once-in-a-lifetime event for our new-members-to-be and we feel this decision provides the best chance for all the family, friends and fans that are special to each inductee to be able to be present in Winston-Salem for the occasion.
Here's some more updates from around Wake Forest Athletics.
2022 Football Schedule Reveal Show Set for Monday Night on ACC Network
With multiple pundits already putting the football Demon Deacons in their early 2022 top 25 rankings, you will want to tune into ACC Network on Monday night at 7 p.m. for the live unveiling of the 2022 ACC football schedule. Thereafter, check out GoDeacs.com and our social media platforms where you will find all the info you need for Wake Forest's 2022 seven-game home slate, including specific dates this fall for Opening Night, Homecoming, Parents & Family Weekend, Senior Day and more. It was awesome to celebrate Wake Forest football's division and bowl championships at halftime of last Saturday's basketball game and see a bunch of veteran Deacons already preparing for an encore in the fall. President Susan R. Wente, Ph.D. and I had fun surprising Coach Dave Clawson with his 2021 ACC Coach of the Year trophy!
Wake Forest Legends Duncan, Grant Garner NCAA Honors
Last week's annual NCAA convention featured both the historic step of member institutions ratifying a new constitution, but perhaps more excitingly two Wake Forest legends received national awards during the NCAA Honors Ceremony. Both Robert Grant and Tim Duncan richly deserved their respective awards for their accomplishments in sport, community and life over the course of their careers! Check out the video recap of Tim earning his Silver Anniversary Award and Bob's acceptance speech after receiving the Inspiration Award.
These two legends join Wake Forest's previous NCAA honors recipients Amy Privett Perko (2012, Silver) and Arnold Palmer (1983, Theodore Roosevelt).
More Demon Deacons & ACC Impact on College Football
Congratulations are in order to another Wake Forest legend, former football coach Jim Grobe, on being named to the College Football Playoff Committee this week. After leading the Demon Deacons to the 2006 ACC Championship, Coach Grobe knows what great teams look like and will bring a great perspective to the CFP Committee. Meanwhile, my Tobacco Road colleague Boo Corrigan of NC State is a great choice to be the new committee Chair.
The Celebration Continues - More on 50 Years of Women's Athletics at Wake Forest
As Wake Forest marks 50 years of women in Demon Deacons Athletics, our partners in the University's Communication & External Relations Office recently asked several women how they embody leadership and character on and off the field.
Through the Deacon Sports Xtra, the free daily newsletter for fans provided by Wake Forest Sports Properties at Learfield, our staff has shared special stories throughout the academic year all of which have been archived on this special webpage.
Speaking of legendary Wake Forest women, what a special moment for our University community and the Angelou family when the U.S. Mint announced last week that Maya Angelou will be featured on a quarter!
Spear Continues to Lead the Deacs - Next Home Game on Thursday, Feb. 3 vs. UNC
After a fast start, injuries and illness have slowed our women's team in January. However, Coach Hoover's squad continues to battle as they look to return to postseason play for the second-straight year.
The Deacons will be in search of their 10th home victory of the season next Thursday against the Tar Heels at 8 p.m. inside Joel Coliseum, which would mark the first time since the 2016-17 season that the Demon Deacons reached the double-digit win total at home.
Sophomore guard Jewel Spear continues to set records as she is leading the ACC in scoring (19.30) and is climbing the Wake Forest record books in three-point field goals made for a single season and career.
Play Ball! Baseball Season Tickets on Sale with Opening Weekend Set for Feb. 18-20
Deacon Nation and college baseball fans across the state of North Carolina will have the opportunity to select from expanded options, including new reserved chairback seating, multiple premium season ticket options, and general admission tickets to catch all 34 home contests inside David F. Opening weekend at the Couch includes games against Lafayette, Georgetown and VCU on Feb. 18-20, which leads off Wake Forest's 11 game non-conference homestand to launch the season. As the weather warms the Deacs will host five highly-anticipated ACC weekend series.
Wake Forest returns 21 players from last season, including 2021 freshman All-American's Brock Wilken and Eric Adler. Fans can purchase ticket packages by visiting GoDeacs.com/tickets now with single game ticket offerings available beginning on Feb. 7.
Spring Sports Roundup; Great Performances & Big Wins!
Wake Forest men's tennis is off to a 7-1 start and are ready to host the ITA Kickoff this weekend inside the Indoor Tennis Center. On the women's side, Coach Jeff Wyshner's squad split a doubleheader last Sunday and hits the road this weekend for the ITA Kickoff. Wake Forest's Indoor Track & Field program recorded some solid performances last weekend at Virginia Tech and will split its programs this weekend at two different meets. Next weekend, our Demon Deacons will remain home in Winston-Salem as they compete in the Camel City Classic at JDL Fast Track.
Not to be outdone, our No. 14 men's golf program had a solid week in their spring season-opening tournament. The Deacs No. 6 ranked women's team is practicing hard at the Dianne Dailey Learning Center and at world-renowned Old Town Club as they open their season in a few weeks at the UCF Challenge in Orlando.
