WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball program will be headed to four different European countries next week for a total of 10 days.
"Basketball in England has been my whole life and been around my family for their whole lives," said Wake Forest guard Cameron Hildreth. "I'm really looking forward to going back home and playing in front of more of a home crowd. I came here last year to chase my dreams of playing basketball in America, so going back to where it all started to play for a short time is really exciting."
The team, coaches and support staff will explore London, Paris, have a day trip to Normandy and finish their trip in Amsterdam. While in London, Paris and Amsterdam, the team will play in some international friendly games.
"I'm really excited to go back to Europe, this is a real opportunity for me and Cam especially," said Wake Forest big man Matthew Marsh. "I'm from Cornwall and lived in Redding for a year so being able to play in London in front of fans, friends and family is a really great opportunity, I can't wait. The last time I was able to play in England was maybe four years ago so it's really exciting."
On the educational side, the group will take multiple tours in each city, starting with a walking tour of London and a tour of the Churchill War Rooms. The group will also visit the Imperial War Museum and the London Olympic facilities.
"I can't wait to go around the Olympic facilities," added Marsh. "London 2012 was huge for me; I remember watching everything and being so passionate about it. I've never been able to go around the facility so I can't wait to do that with the team."
In Paris, the team will see the Eiffel Tower and go on a bike tour around the city in addition to their game. The day trip from Paris to Normandy will include stops at the Utah Beach Museum, Pointe du Hoc Battlefield, the American Military Cemetery and Omaha Beach.
"I think it's going to be a great experience for the team, being able to go overseas and have some time away from America all together will be cool," said Hildreth.
The trip will end in Amsterdam with another city bike tour, a scavenger hunt around the city, and stops at the van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank Museum. The Deacs will depart Winston-Salem on Monday, August 1 and return on Thursday, August 11.
