How it Happened

  • Paige Crawford got Wake Forest going with three quick kills in set one.

  • Traded attacks between the two sides soon took place, resulting in a 9-9 tie.

    • Much of the same continued up until Wake Forest broke in front by three points.

  • Ashley Slater and Peyton Suess mainly led the way through the next batch of play, as Charlotte struggled with a few errors.

  • Cleaning up some things, the 49ers responded with a trio of unanswered points, tying the margin again, at 18-18.

  • Suess quickly took over on a personal spurt to again create some comfort, 22-19.

    • The 49ers subsequently called for a timeout.

    • A big rejection by Crawford and Olivia Franke occurred on the very next possession.

  • Suess delivered the set's winning point for Wake Forest on a right-side tip kill.

    • The Deacs won set one, 25-21.

  • A pair of service errors had the score evened at 5-5 early during the second frame.

    • Andrea Fuentes soon dished out a service ace.

      • Franke went up the middle for a third kill as a follow-up.

  • Ogogor reached her 500th career kill during the set, doing so on Wake Forest's tenth point.

  • Leading 14-9, the Deacons forced another timeout by Charlotte.

  • The 49ers pieced a 5-1 run next, creeping back into the deficit and trailing 16-15.

    • After Charlotte briefly tied things up on a following block, Ashley Slater put an end to the run with a hard swing of her own.

    • The junior and Ogogor combined to stretch the Deacon advantage to 21-16 before Charlotte took another break to talk things through.

  • Another throw down the middle by Ogogor put the Wake Forest lead at 23-19.

  • Charlotte scored the next three, but Suess had an answer on timing up a soft hit.

  • A final rally that went for nearly a minute closed out the second set in Wake Forest's favor, as Suess again punched in the decision.

  • The Deacs won set two, 25-22.

  • Wake Forest started the third period ahead, 5-1.

    • A service error by the 49ers grew the advantage to 9-3.

  • Franke then nailed a pair of attacks before Emma Farrell lined up an ace, upping the lead to 12-6.

  • Charlotte got on a hot streak, scoring on four unanswered tries and staying closely behind, 15-13.

  • The next four possessions were traded.

    • Crawford rocketed an outside slam to bump another slight edge for Wake Forest, 18-16.

    • Douglas and Slater began another stint for their group, and Ogogor quickly took over.

      • The senior netted back-to-back kills as the match began to wind down.

  • Charlotte suffered from an attacking error and Slater put an end to the evening with one final punch.

    • The Deacs won set three on a 25-19 mark.

  • Wake Forest swept Charlotte, 3-0.

From the Head Honcho

"I am proud of how the team continues to compete and score with great defense," said head coach Randi Smart. "We have different players stepping up in each match, and that is something we have been striving for. Tonight was a strong way to end non-conference play and head into Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action."

Up Next

Conference play arrives next for the Deacs, staying on the road for their first two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) matches at Georgia Tech (Sept. 23) and Clemson (Sept. 25).
