The Demon Deacons are seeking their first ACC title since 1994.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 9 ranked Wake Forest men's cross country team has been selected to win the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) this season, while the Demon Deacon women have been picked to finish ninth, as announced by the league office Friday.
The Wake Forest men, seeking the program's fifth ACC title and first since 1994, received eight first-place votes and finished with 210 total points. The Demon Deacons place just ahead of two-time defending ACC champion Notre Dame (five first-place votes, 205 points). North Carolina (193 points) and Virginia (164) each picked up one first-place vote to round out the top four.
Preseason accolades continue to roll in for the Demon Deacons as they were selected to win the NCAA Southeast Regional title by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.
The Deacs, led by director of track & field and cross country John Hayes, will look to build upon a strong 2021 campaign in which they took the team title at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, marking the best regional finish for the program since 1993. With taking the top spot in the regional, the Demon Deacons punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships for the second time since 2001.
This year, the Demon Deacons are led by two-time All-American Zach Facioni and last season's regional runner-up Aaron Las Heras. Wake Forest also returns All-Region honorees Luke Tewalt, Joaquin Martinez de Pinillos and Thomas Vanoppen.
Despite being picked to finish ninth in the ACC, the women were picked to finish sixth in the Southeast Region by the USTFCCCA. The Deacs 2021 season was highlighted by a first place finish at the Chanticleer Challenge and a second place finish at the Wolfpack Adidas Cross Country Challenge. The women also placed eighth out of 31 Division I teams at the NCAA Southeast Regional a season ago.
