Demon Deacons Host No. 10 Virginia Cavaliers in Weekend Matchup
1/20/2023 12:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team will host the No. 10 Virginia Cavaliers Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21) inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff against the Cavaliers is slated for 2 p.m. ET and the game will air live on ESPNU.
The Deacs (14-5, 6-2) are coming off their fourth-straight conference win of the season against the No. 19 Clemson Tigers on Tuesday night (Jan. 14) in Winston-Salem. Additionally, Tuesday's win over the ranked team marked the first time since the 2013-14 season that the Deacs have beaten two top-25 teams in the same season, after also defeating then-No 14 Duke in December.
Tuesday night marked the 20th game in Wake Forest history in which the Deacons have faced an opponent standing at 7-0 or better in the ACC at game time. Although 5-15 in all, the Deacs have won the past three such meetings, prevailing over Clemson on Tuesday night, Miami in 2013 and Duke in 2008.
Clemson shot 29.6 percent from three-point range on Tuesday night. That mark was the third-lowest in conference play for the Tigers. Wake Forest's 87 points against Clemson were the most the Tigers have allowed in conference play and the most a team has scored against Clemson when Clemson has lost this season. Wake Forest's six turnovers were the lowest by an ACC team against Clemson this season. It also marked the lowest number of turnovers in a game in the Steve Forbes Era at Wake Forest. The Deacs' 45.9 field goal percentage was the highest shooting clip Clemson has allowed in conference play and third-highest by a Clemson opponent this season.
With Andrew Carr and Cameron Hildreth each recording a double-double on Tuesday night, it was the first time two Wake Forest players recorded a double-double in the same game since Dallas Walton and Alondes Williams each had one against NC State on March 2, 2022.
Carr became the first Deac since Jake LaRavia last season to notch back-to-back double-doubles, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Carr added three assists and continued his efficiency, going 7-of-12 on field goal attempts. Hildreth totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Tyree Appleby ended with a line of 24 points, seven assists, and five steals while playing all 40 minutes and leading all scorers. It was the graduate guard's seventh season game of over 20 points. Appleby's five steals were a new career high. Damari Monsanto chipped in 17 points and a 60.0 field goal percentage, going 6-of-10 from the field.
The Cavaliers are tied with the Demon Deacons in the conference standings at 6-2 and are 14-3 overall. Armaan Franklin leads the team with 11.9 points per game. Kihei Clark (11.0) and Jayden Gardner (10.3) are also averaging double figures and Gardner leads the team on the glass, pulling down 4.9 boards per game. While the Deacs have the highest scoring offense in the league during ACC play at 79.50 points per game, the Cavaliers have the strongest defense, limiting ACC teams to just 62.13 points per game.
