The Demon Deacons faced Old Dominion on the final day in Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Finishing its out-of-state, weekend slate on Saturday night (Jan. 28), the Wake Forest women's tennis team battled against the Old Dominion Monarchs (3-1) in a consolation matchup within the 14th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend, held on the campus grounds of Ohio State University.

The Demon Deacons (2-2) competed through hours of dual match play before suffering a 4-3 defeat versus Old Dominion. The doubles point firstly went toward the way of Wake Forest, along with two singles wins, as the match's scoring column became evened on several occasions.

Saturday night featured the third solo wins of the year for Anna Brylin and Nevena Carton. Additionally, in doubles, Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth now hold a 3-0 record in 2023.

Wake Forest is now 11-3 all-time versus the Monarchs. A rematch between the two sides will take place next Sunday (Feb. 5) when Old Dominion visits the Deacs.

How it Happened

  • In typical fashion, No. 12 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth jumped on a fast start in doubles, quickly taking the opening three games.

  • On court two, Mia Ahmad/Casie Wooten worked to even their match at 2-2.

  • Brylin/Killingsworth split the next pair of games, still ahead 4-1.

  • After Ahmad/Wooten again balanced the margin (3-3), Carton/Pate took a slight 3-2 gain.

  • Two more final games were divided on court one, as Brylin/Killingsworth comfortably captured a 6-2 victory.

    • Each of the two remaining doubles matches became even at 4-4 all.

  • Ahmad/Wooten forced yet another tied score, their fourth of the match, sitting at 5-5.

  • Nevertheless, Carton/Pate completed the deed in doubles by winning two more games in a row, clinching the point on a 6-4 decision.

  • Early in singles action, Carton stepped ahead on a 3-1 first-set start in the fourth spot.

    • Her classmate, Pate, also had a solid opening in solo play (4-2).

  • Carton ultimately became Wake Forest's first individual to scoop a win in her first set (6-2).

    • Pate followed with a victory of own, 6-3, to hold an advantage.

  • In second singles, Brylin forced her way into a 6-6 tiebreaker.

    • The graduate built an early lead of points en route to a 7-6 (6) finish.

      • Three Deacs – Brylin, Carton, and Pate – all earned wins in set one of singles.

  • Wooten displayed an impressive, bounce-back showing in her second frame, creating a third set of competition.

    • Carton and Pate each also soon entered a third set.

  • Old Dominion finished victorious in sixth singles to tie the match, 1-1.

  • The scoreboard shifted minutes later, as Carton stayed heady in a three-set performance to put Wake Forest back ahead, 2-1.

  • Brylin plugged in another point soon afterward, doing so in a straight-sets fashion.

  • The Monarchs worked to stay close, winning in fifth singles to trail 3-2.

  • After making a come-from-behind win in set two, Killingsworth became the fourth Deacon to enter a third period.

    • The junior found herself on the final active court once Old Dominion again tied the board, 3-3, on a first singles win.

  • The Monarchs won the third set in third singles, officially clinching the match.

  • Wake Forest fell, 4-3.

From the Head Honcho

"That was a good old knockdown, dragout, college tennis match," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "It is always rough to lose those when you are a couple of points away from winning, but we played much better today than we did yesterday. In January, that's certainly important."
