
Wake Forest, North Carolina Meet in Top-15 Big Four Clash At Spry Stadium

Wake Forest and North Carolina will meet in a Big Four showdown with massive ACC implications.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a matchup featuring two of the ACC's seven teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll, the No. 4 ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team will host No. 14 North Carolina on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.
The night will serve as Wake Forest's annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match. The wife of former men's soccer athletic trainer Steve Wiley, Genna passed away after a long battle with breast cancer three days after Wake Forest won the 2007 NCAA National Championship.
The team will be wearing pink jerseys for the match, with all proceeds raised going to the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Cancer Health Equity Patient Care Fund. Bidding is open now through the end of the day Saturday.
Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

The Matchup
- The Demon Deacons and Tar Heels will meet in a pivotal matchup in conference play on Saturday night, as Wake Forest enters the match 9-1-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the ACC while North Carolina is 6-1-4 overall with a 1-1-3 ACC record.
- Wake Forest is currently unbeaten at Spry Stadium this season with a 6-0-2 record at home including a victory over Clemson and a draw with then-No. 7 Syracuse, while North Carolina is 2-0-2 away from Chapel Hill.
- Each team has been particularly strong against opposing attacks, as the Deacs allow only 0.69 goals per match while the Tar Heels allow 0.64 goals per match.
- Through five conference matches, Wake Forest is currently in first place in the Atlantic Division with 10 points while North Carolina has 6 points, trailing Notre Dame (13), Pitt (8), Virginia (7) and Virginia Tech (7) while being tied with Duke (6) in the Coastal Division.
- Through Thursday's action, Wake Forest (No. 7) and North Carolina (No. 8) both ranked in the top-10 in NCAA RPI as well.
- The matchup will be the 49th between the Demon Deacons and Tar Heels dating back to Wake Forest's inaugural season in 1980.
- This will also be the 24th showdown in Winston-Salem, with Wake Forest claiming seven victories against North Carolina on home soil including a 1-0 overtime victory against the Tar Heels in their last appearance at Spry Stadium on Oct. 18, 2020.
- Wake Forest returned to Spry on Tuesday night to earn its ninth overall victory of the season and sixth at home in a 2-0 victory over Wofford.
- Despite the Deacs holding a 14-1 advantage in shots in the first half, the two sides went into the halftime break knotted at 0-0.
- Wake Forest, however, would break open the scoring in the 62nd minute after Jahlane Forbes was taken down inside the 18. Julian Kennedy stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick and buried his third goal of the season.
- Then in the 69th minute, Vlad Walent logged his first goal of the season to push the Deacs' lead to 2-0.
- The Terriers registered just two shots on goal all night – both of which were saved by Trace Alphin – as the Demon Deacons recorded their sixth shutout of 2023.
- Wofford traveled to Winston-Salem riding a nine-match unbeaten streak dating back to a 2-2 draw with then-No. 3 Duke on Aug. 31.
- Saturday's match will mark the second time in as many weeks Wake Forest will face a Big Four foe in ACC play after defeating NC State last Friday 3-0 at Dail Soccer Field.
- With that victory, Wake Forest is now a collective 18-3-3 against NC State, North Carolina and Duke under head coach Bobby Muuss.
- This will be the seventh time Wake Forest and North Carolina have met in the last nine seasons, with the Deacs holding a 5-1-0 advantage in matches played between the two sides since 2015.
- Through 13 matches, the Demon Deacons have conceded just nine goals while recording six shutouts. The 0.69 goals allowed per match ranks top-15 nationally and third in the ACC behind only Notre Dame (0.58) and North Carolina (0.64).
- The Deacs have recorded three-straight shutouts overall and also three-straight shutouts in ACC play, having not conceded a goal to a conference opponent since a 1-1 draw with Syracuse on Sept. 16.
- Joining the team during the fall of the split 2020-21 season, this year's Wake Forest senior class has continued the longstanding tradition of excellence for the program.
- With one more victory, this year's senior class – which will be honored prior to the start of next Friday's match against No. 8 Notre Dame – will reach 50 victories over the last four seasons. Wake Forest could join Washington and Clemson as the only programs with 50 wins since the start of the 2020-21 season.
- To date, this group of seniors has helped extend Wake Forest's ACC-best streak of NCAA Tournament appearances to 12 consecutive seasons while also earning a trip to the Elite Eight in 2020-21 and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2021.
- In a 2-0 victory over Wofford on Tuesday night, the Demon Deacons reached 100 home victories over the last nine seasons, becoming the first program nationally to hit this mark since the 2015 opener.
- Wake Forest's 100 home victories are 21 more than any other program over the last nine seasons (Indiana, 79):

- North Carolina this season has been led by the one-two scoring punch of Quenzi Huerman (seven goals, three assists) and Martin Vician (five goals, two assists). Huerman has scored in five different matches this season including the Tar Heels' contests against Virginia Tech and Duke.
- Three different goalkeepers have started for the Tar Heels this season, led by Andrew Cordes who has started the last six matches. The Denver native has recorded 19 saves and conceded just two goals.
- Collectively, North Carolina has not allowed more than one goal in any match this season.
- Wake Forest will host its final non-conference match of the regular season on Tuesday night against Robert Morris.
