Deacs Defense Leads Wake Forest to 2-1 Win at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio - The Wake Forest field hockey team earned their second-straight nonconference victory with a 2-1 win over the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday at Pruitt Field.
Freshman Mia Shoenbeck opened the scoring in the match with her first career goal as a Demon Deacon coming off of a penalty corner in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Shoenbeck finished the contest with three of Wake's 13 shots.
Junior Brooke McCusker extended the Wake (5-6, 0-3 ACC) lead in the third with her second goal of the season and seventh of her career.
In the cage, Ellie Todd made six saves, while the Wake defense surrendered just one goal on 18 Bobcat (4-7, 2-2 MAC) shots.

How It Happened
- Wake earned their first corner with 4:17 left in the opening quarter.
- Faye Janse ripped a shot that was blocked by a Bobcat defender.
- The Deacs defense was the star of the first 15 minutes, holding Ohio to two shots and no corners.
- With Grace Delmotte inserting and Lee Ann Gordan on the stop Schoenbeck ripped a shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the net to give Wake Forest the 1-0 lead on their third corner of the afternoon early in the second quarter.
- Goalie Ellie Todd wouldn't be tested for the first 23:56 of the match, until the sophomore made her first and only save of the first half on a Bobcat shot.
- Through 30 minutes of action, Wake and Ohio both took six shots, with Wake putting four on frame.
- McCusker doubles the Deacs lead just 1:34 into the second half with her second goal of the season.
- McCusker found a bouncing ball inside the circle and fired from the right side into the left post of the cage to make it 2-0 Wake Forest.
- Ohio got a goal back 5:35 into the third quarter as Katelyn Whittle scored her 10th of the season to make it 2-1.
- The Bobcats earned back-to-back corners with under two minutes remaining, but the Wake defense was up to the task, turning away both of the Ohio chances to preserve the lead going into the fourth quarter.
- Anna Gwiazdzinski nearly put the Deacs up by two once again, having her shot blocked just into the final 15 minutes of play.
- Ohio had the tying goal waved off with 8:25 remaining in the match with a foul called on the Bobcats to negate what would have been a 2-2 score.
