No. 17 Wake Forest Falls to Pitt

PITTSBURGH – The Wake Forest women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Pitt Sunday at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The loss marked only the second this season for the Demon Deacons (8-2-3, 2-2-2 ACC) and their second against Pitt all-time. Additionally. Pitt's four goals scored Sunday marked the most Wake Forest had allowed since the Deacs fell 4-1 at Georgia on April 3rd, 2021.

Pitt jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind a goal from Anna Bout in the 30th minute and took a one-goal advantage into halftime.

Junior forward Emily Murphy leveled the contest in the 58th minute as she found herself on the end of a ball from fellow junior Laurel Ansbrow, before she dropped a defender and fired it into the bottom-left corner. It marked the fifth goal of the season for Murphy and the 15th of her collegiate career.

Pitt took the lead for good in the 66th minute after a goal from Sarah Schupansky. The Panthers later secured the victory with goals in the 81st and 86th minutes, despite constant attacking pressure from Wake Forest.

Senior goalkeeper Maddy Howard set a new career-high with eight saves, doubling her previous best of four.

How It Happened

Wake Forest came out controlling possession in the midfield early.
Kristin Johnson attempted the Demon Deacons' first shot of the match in the ninth minute but her attempt was saved by Pitt's keeper.
Pitt attempted two shots in the first 17 minutes but neither attempt was on frame.
Hannah Johnson attempted the Deacs' second shot of the match in the 25th minute.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute on a goal from Anna Bout.
Pitt held a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.
The Demon Deacons started the second half aggressively, pressuring Pitt's back line.
Emily Murphy evened the ledger in the 58th minute.
- The goal marked Murphy's fifth of the season.
Pitt took a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute behind a goal from Sarah Schupansky.
Despite continuous pressure from Wake Forest in its attacking third, the Panthers struck again in the 81st and 86th minutes to secure the victory.
Howard recorded her career-high eighth save of the afternoon after a one-on-one opportunity for Pitt in the 90th minute.
Pitt held on to hand Wake Forest its second ACC loss of the season.
