Deacs to Step into Second Season Meetings at Notre Dame and Virginia Tech

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A final week of road matchups within the 2023 regular season has arrived for Wake Forest volleyball, as the team will travel out of state later this week for two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) tests.

The Demon Deacons are set to firstly visit Notre Dame on Friday evening (Nov. 17) before heading over to Virginia Tech for an early-Sunday afternoon showing (Nov. 19).

Both matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

Wake Forest is at a 17-9 overall record and 8-7 versus conference competition – a mark that is tied for seventh in the ACC.

Last Time Out

Friday, Nov. 10 – North Carolina 3, Wake Forest 2

Wake Forest faced North Carolina (12-12, 6-9) for the second time in a six-day stretch this past Friday night (Nov. 10). The contest turned into another five-set, toe-to-toe battle between both sides before North Carolina ended with the victory, 3-2.

Friday night featured the 12th time this year that three or more Deacs recorded 10+ kills, as Paige Crawford (16), Ava Carney (14) and Ashley Slater (10) all paced the offensive attack. Slater and Carney additionally notched a .474 and .355 hitting clip, respectively. Crawford added five digs and three blocks to her line.

Rian Baker tied her career high in service aces (4) during the contest. The sophomore setter tallied a match-best 45 assists, seven digs and four kills for an overall, well-rounded performance.

Emma Farrell and Ava Torrance gathered more digs than anyone else, finishing with 15 and 13 respectively.

Emmy Ogogor contributed seven kills and six blocks.

Wake Forest ended with the upper hand in digs over North Carolina (56-48).


Rian Recently …

Sophomore setter Rian Baker has taken a leap in her last three appearances for the Deacs, reaching a new high in single-match assists versus an ACC foe through each of the three. The sophomore has also made a handful of defensive plays and dump kills:

Winding Down

With only two weeks left in the regular season, three Deacons still hold top-10 individual rankings within various ACC categories:
  • Senior middle blocker Olivia Franke: tied for 9th in hitting percentage (.381)
  • Sophomore libero Emma Farrell: 7th in digs (3.72/set)
  • Sophomore setter Rian Baker: 8th in assists (8.20/set)


Additional Notes
  • Per the latest NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), released on Monday (Nov. 13), Wake Forest moved to No. 44.
  • This past Friday against North Carolina (Nov. 10), senior middle blocker Olivia Franke moved into the top-15 of individuals in career blocks throughout program history, currently tied for 15th with 267.
    • Additionally, fellow seniors Emmy Ogogor and Ashley Slater notched the 400th and 100th blocks of their careers in the North Carolina outing.
  • Sophomore libero Emma Farrell has tallied 15 or more digs in all three of the team's last matches.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Paige Crawford has led Wake Forest in kills on 15 separate occasions this year.

Scouting the Opposition

Notre Dame is at 10-14 overall and 4-12 in ACC play after losing nine matches in a row. The Fighting Irish's Senior Night headlines the Friday match (Nov. 17). As a team, Notre Dame ranks sixth in the conference in digs (13.61/set). Standouts for the team continue to be:
  • Junior outside hitter Sydney Palazzolo: first in points (4.59/set), second in kills (3.86/set) and second in service aces (0.49/set) within the conference
  • Senior defensive specialist/libero Hattie Monson: sixth in digs (3.82/set) within the conference
  • Graduate setter Nicole Drewnick: sixth in assists (8.87/set) within the conference

Holding a 12-14 overall clip, Virginia Tech has gone 2-13 versus ACC competition and has lost six consecutive matches. The Hokies most recently took on Big Four foe NC State at home (Nov. 12), falling in a 3-1 defeat. Virginia Tech has been mostly led by:
  • Sophomore setter Hanna Borer: fourth in assists (9.13/set)
  • Graduate libero/defensive specialist Iliana Rodriguez: fifth in digs (3.85/set)
  • Senior middle blocker Cara Lewis: ninth in hitting percentage (.381)


Up Next

The 2023 regular-season finale will take place inside Varsity Arena next Wednesday (Nov. 22), as the Deacs are primed to host Boston College in a 4 p.m. ET showdown. Wake Forest downed the Eagles on the road earlier this season (Oct. 6) in a 3-1 decision.
