The Matchup
  • The Deacs earned a first round bye and the No. 10 national seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, as Wake Forest is currently 11-2-5 on the year. The program in October claimed its fifth ACC Atlantic Division title in nine seasons, as the Deacs earned at least one point in seven-straight conference regular season matches.
  • Indiana, meanwhile, is 13-4-4 on the campaign and currently riding a six-match winning streak after downing Lipscomb 2-1 in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Thursday night. During the six-match run, Indiana claimed a Big Ten double by winning the regular season title before defeating Penn State 1-0 in the Big Ten Tournament Championship last weekend.
  • These two programs are the model of consistency in college soccer, sporting the two longest consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance streaks nationally. Additionally, they are the only two programs with double-digit NCAA Tournament appearance streaks.
  • Over the last nine seasons, Wake Forest (140) and Indiana (132) rank Nos. 1 and 2 nationally in total wins and home wins (Wake Forest at 102 and Indiana at 86). Wake Forest has earned seven Round of 16 trips since 2015 while Indiana has earned eight.
  • Sunday's match will mark the sixth all-time meeting between the programs, as Wake Forest has won three of the previous matchups including a 1-0 victory in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
Last Time Out
  • Despite dominating in possession (67 percent), shots (11-to-5), shots on goal (6-to-3), and corner kicks (8-to-1), the Demon Deacons fell to North Carolina 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on Nov. 5.
  • Trailing 1-0 going into the halftime break, Wake Forest increased pressure on North Carolina's backline, but none of the Deacs' six second half shots were able to even the scoreline.
  • Excluding the split season in 2020-21, the 14-day stretch between the North Carolina and Indiana matches marks the longest span between matches in the program's 43-year history. The previous longest span between matches was 12 days on four different occasions.
Wake Forest In The NCAA Tournament
  • The Demon Deacons will be making their 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, as Wake Forest has the nation's second-longest streak and is one of only two programs nationally with a double-digit streak alongside Indiana.
  • The 13-straight appearances are also eight more than any ACC program, as the conference earned a national-best nine berths in this year's NCAA Tournament.
  • This marks the 11th straight season in which the ACC placed the most teams in the tournament and the 23rd consecutive season that at least five league teams earned a bid.
  • In total, Wake Forest has made 27 NCAA Tournament appearances in the program's 43-year existence and 22 times over the last 23 seasons.
  • Including seven appearances under current head coach Bobby Muuss, the Demon Deacons have made 14 appearances in the Round of 16.
  • Additionally, Wake Forest has earned six trips to the College Cup: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2016 and 2019.
  • Along with winning the 2007 NCAA Championship in a 2-1 comeback victory over Ohio State, the Demon Deacons also made the College Cup Final in 2016.
  • Overall, Wake Forest is 37-22-10 in NCAA Tournament action and 16-8-0 under Muuss.
2023 ACC Honors For Six Demon Deacons
  • Headlined by an ACC Defensive Player of the Year and All-ACC first-team selection for Garrison Tubbs, six Deacs earned conference honors. In addition to Tubbs, Jahlane Forbes, Hosei Kijima, Trace Alphin and Roald Mitchell earned All-ACC second-team selections and Winston-Salem native Liam O'Gara was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team.
  • Joining Wake Forest Sports Hall of Famer Michael Parkhurst (2004), 2007 National Champion Ike Opara (2008 and 2009) and Kevin Politz (2017), Tubbs' selection for ACC Defensive Player of the Year was the fifth in program history. Additionally, he was the only defensive player named All-ACC first-team.
  • These six are also joined by previous All-ACC selections in Jake Swallen (third-team; 2021), Prince Amponsah (third team; 2022), Babacar Niang (third team; 2022), Cooper Flax (All-Freshman; 2022) and Vlad Walent (All-Freshman; 2022) on this year's talented roster.
ACC Atlantic Division Champions
  • Earning at least one point in each of the final seven ACC regular season matches, Wake Forest in October claimed its fifth ACC Atlantic Division title in nine seasons.
  • Since going to the current divisional format starting in 2014, Wake Forest's five division titles leads the ACC:
School ACC Division Titles
Wake Forest 5 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2023)
North Carolina  4 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018)
Clemson 4 (2014, 2019, 2020, 2021)
Syracuse 2 (2014, 2022)
Duke 2 (2021, 2022)
Notre Dame 2 (2014, 2023)
Louisville 1 (2021)
Pitt 1 (2020)
Virginia 1 (2019)

Scouting the Hoosiers
  • Representing the Big Ten Conference as the lone team in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, Indiana will travel to Winston-Salem on a six-match winning streak and unbeaten in 10 of its last 11 appearances. During that span, the Hoosiers claimed the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles while also downing Lipscomb 2-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Hoosiers have been led offensively this season by Samuel Sarver, as he paces Indiana in points (22), goals (eight), assists (six) and game-winning goals (five). A 2022 All-College Cup Team selection, Sarver scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Penn State to secure the Big Ten Tournament title for Indiana.
  • Defensively, Indiana ranks 16th nationally in goals against average (0.762) as the team has recorded eight clean sheets this season. The Hoosiers have allowed more than one goal only twice on the campaign.
Looking Ahead
  • If the Demon Deacons are able to advance against Indiana, Wake Forest will face either No. 7 seed Virginia or FIU next weekend in the Round of 16. If Virginia advances, Wake Forest will travel to Charlottesville while FIU advancing would keep the Deacs at Spry.
  • All Round of 16 matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
