Deacs to Host Eagles in Wednesday Regular-Season Finale

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Fans will be able to check out Wake Forest volleyball one more time for the 2023 regular season prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, as the team plays its finale at home against Boston College (17-13, 6-10) on Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 22). The contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET inside Varsity Arena.

The Demon Deacons enter the match at 17-11 overall with an 8-9 record in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play.

Those not in attendance can view Wednesday's matchup on ACC Network Extra.

This will be the second meeting of 2023 between the Deacs and Eagles.

Last Time Out

Friday, Nov. 17 – Notre Dame 3, Wake Forest 2

Wake Forest volleyball visited Notre Dame last Friday evening (Nov. 17), suffering a 3-2 defeat after going to five sets for a third-straight showing.

Rian Baker notched her sixth double-double of the year, finishing with a career-high 51 assists, along with 12 digs.

In addition to Baker, three other Deacs tallied double-figures in digs: Emma Farrell (22 – good for a match high), Kalani Whillock (17 – tied for a season high) and Ava Torrance (14). Farrell's mark in digs was her fourth season performance of 20 or more.

It was the fourth time this year in which four Wake Forest players totaled 10 or more kills: Ava Carney (13), Emmy Ogogor (12), Ashley Slater (11) and Paige Crawford (11).


Sunday, Nov. 19 – Virginia Tech 3, Wake Forest 1

On the road one final time for the 2023 regular season, Wake Forest visited Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 19). The Demon Deacons were able to capture the first set, but ultimately were downed, 3-1, in Blacksburg.

Wake Forest split its regular-season series versus the Hokies, 1-1.

Senior hitter Ashley Slater impressed with an efficient, season-high mark of 15 kills on a .480 hitting percentage. Her classmate Olivia Franke chipped in 11 kills and a .320 attacking clip.

Freshman hitter Ava Carney was a two-way standout, finishing with 14 kills and seven digs.

Sunday was the 13th time this season in which Wake Forest had three or more of its own register double figures in kills.

For the fourth match in a row, sophomore setter Rian Baker recorded over 40 assists. The Rolling Meadows, Illinois, native tossed out 43 for the day, including eight digs.

Defensively, Emma Farrell and Ava Torrance each totaled 10 digs.

Rian Baker has increased her output of assists through the Deacs' latest showings, having handed out 43 or more in each of her last four matches:

The sophomore setter has tallied 40+ assists on ten separate occasions this year, including two with 50 or more – a first in her young career.

  • Wake Forest defeated Boston College earlier this season on Oct. 6, 2023 in a 3-1 road victory.
  • A pair of Deacons rank in the top 10 within ACC individual statistical categories:
  • Senior hitter Ashley Slater reached over 700 career kills this past weekend.
  • Senior middle blocker Olivia Franke has recently moved her up in career records for blocks throughout program history:
    • 274 total blocks for career – ranks 14th all time
    • 49 solo blocks for career – ranks 13th all time
    • 225 assisted blocks for career – ranks 13th all time

Scouting the Opposition

Boston College has been at its best defensively, ranking second in both digs (14.24/set) and blocks (2.47/set) as a team among all conference member schools. The Eagles are coming off a 3-1 road victory at Syracuse that occurred this past weekend (Nov. 17). A few team standouts include:
  • Junior middle blocker/right-side hitter Julia Haggerty – ranks second in the league in blocks (1.42/set)
  • Senior libero Anna Murphy – ranks second in the league in digs (4.35/set)
  • Senior setter Sophia Lambros – ranks seventh in the league in service aces (0.38/set)
