The Matchup
- Wake Forest and North Carolina will meet for the second time in a month, as the Demon Deacons host the Tar Heels with a spot in the ACC Tournament semifinals on the line.
- The Deacs enter Sunday on a 12-match unbeaten streak and are currently 11-1-5 overall on the year. The Tar Heels, meanwhile, are 8-3-5 following a 4-1 victory over Virginia Tech in the first round of the ACC Tournament Wednesday night.
- Wake Forest claimed its fifth ACC Atlantic Division title in nine years last Friday, as the Deacs earned at least one point in each of their last seven conference regular season matches.
- The Demon Deacons (.76) and Tar Heels (.63) rank third and second in the ACC respectively in goal against per game this season.
- Individually, Wake Forest's Roald Mitchell and North Carolina's Quenzi Huerman rank tied for fourth in the ACC in total points at 21, as each has recorded nine goals with three assists so far during the 2023 season.
- This will mark the 50th matchup all-time between Wake Forest and North Carolina, as the Demon Deacons trail in the all-time series 16-23-10.
- Wake Forest concluded the 2023 regular season earning a road point in a 2-2 draw with Louisville.
- Despite striking first in the 27th minute off a Jahlane Forbes goal, the Demon Deacons went into the halftime break trailing the Cardinals 2-1. It marked the first time Wake Forest had trailed in a match since a 1-1 draw with then-No. 7 Syracuse on Sept. 16.
- The Deacs fought back, however, as their efforts were rewarded in the 80th minute when Hosei Kijima found the back of the net for the third time this season to ensure Wake Forest's outright ACC Atlantic Division title.
- Wake Forest finished the night with significant advantages in shots (18-to-4), shots on goal (9-to-2) and controlled 60 percent of the possession over Louisville.
- Earning at least one point in each of the final seven ACC regular season matches, Wake Forest claimed its fifth ACC Atlantic Division title in nine seasons last Friday.
- Since going to the current divisional format starting in 2014, Wake Forest's five division titles leads the ACC:
School | ACC Division Titles |
Wake Forest | 5 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2023) |
North Carolina | 4 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) |
Clemson | 4 (2014, 2019, 2020, 2021) |
Syracuse | 2 (2014, 2022) |
Duke | 2 (2021, 2022) |
Notre Dame | 2 (2014, 2023) |
Louisville | 1 (2021) |
Pitt | 1 (2020) |
Virginia | 1 (2019) |
- Competing in the toughest conference in the country, Wake Forest has won three ACC Tournament titles (1989, 2016, 2017) and is 23-28-13 all-time in postseason conference action.
- Under head coach Bobby Muuss, the Deacs are 9-6-2 in the ACC Tournament.
- All-time, the Deacs are 6-2-2 as a No. 2 seed.
- In ACC Tournament quarterfinals matches, Wake Forest is 15-11-7 in the program's 43-year history.
- The Deacs are also 10-8-2 in ACC Tournament matches played in Winston-Salem with eight of those home victories coming in the Muuss Era.
- Wake Forest remains the most recent program to win back-to-back ACC Tournament titles, as there has been a different winner each of the last six seasons: Wake Forest (2017), Louisville (2018), Virginia (2019), Clemson (2020), Notre Dame (2021) and Syracuse (2022).
- The Deacs will look to continue their strong efforts at Spry this season, as Wake Forest is 8-0-3 in home matches in 2023.
- Wake Forest was one of only two ACC programs to not suffer a home loss during the regular season, joined by Duke.
- With a 2-0 victory over Wofford on Oct. 10, Wake Forest became the first program to reach 100 home victories over the last nine years. Followed by victories over North Carolina and Robert Morris, Wake Forest's 102 home victories during that span are 20 more than any other program (Indiana, 82) and 23 more than any other ACC program (Clemson, 79).
- Including victories over NC State (3-0) and North Carolina (1-0), Sunday's match will mark the third time this season Wake Forest has faced a Big Four foe.
- Under ninth-year head coach Bobby Muuss, Wake Forest is a combined 19-3-3 against NC State, North Carolina and Duke and 9-1-1 against those schools at Spry.
- Since 2015, Wake Forest is 6-1-0 against North Carolina with five of those victories coming against a ranked Tar Heels side.
- The Tar Heels will travel to Winston-Salem on the heels of a 4-1 victory over Virginia Tech to open ACC Tournament play. Despite falling behind in the second minute to the Hokies, North Carolina scored four unanswered goals to take down Virginia Tech.
- North Carolina has been led offensively this season by Quenzi Huerman's nine goals and three assists. He has also collected four game-winning goals on the campaign.
- Andrew Cordes has continued to serve as North Carolina's starting goalkeeper, as he's appeared in 11 matches with 10 starts to record 34 saves and a 0.46 goals against average.
- If Wake Forest is able to advance against North Carolina, the Demon Deacons will remain at Spry Stadium next Wednesday for a home ACC semifinal match against either No. 3 seed Virginia or No. 6 seed Syracuse.
- Kick-off will be at either 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. and the match will air on the ACC Network.
