Deacs Back at LJVM Coliseum for Final Time in 2023

Wake Forest is back home for the final time in 2023 Thursday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum as it takes on Marshall at Noon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team is back home for the final time in 2023 Thursday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
 
The Demon Deacons (3-8) are the opening leg of a double header with the men's basketball team who will play later in the day at 3:00 p.m. Parking will be free for all patrons until 12:30 p.m. and tickets for either game will get you in to see both Demon Deacon teams play on Thursday. So far this season, Wake Forest has played one of the most difficult schedules in the country as their schedule is the No. 28 most difficult according to the NCAA NET calculations on Wednesday. 
 
The Thundering Herd (6-4) come into the game riding a four-game winning streak, scoring 84 or more points in each game including 91 points in a win over Marshall. The Herd play one of the most up tempo  offenses in the country, attempting the second-highest number of threes per game with 30.3 per game. Additionally they have turned teams over at an impressive rate this season, ranking second nationally with 25.4 turnovers forced per game while leading the country with 15.4 steals per game. They are led offensively by Abby Beeman who ranks 16th in the country with 6.3 assists per game while also having 17.9 points per game this season.
 
Tipoff for Thursday is scheduled for Noon (ET) at LJVM Coliseum.

ASSISTS ON MADE BASKETS
The Demon Deacons recorded 11 assists on 15 made baskets (73.3 percent) against the Hoyas.
It marked the seventh-consecutive game in which the Deacs recorded at least 10 assists and ninth time overall.
 
This season, the Deacs have assisted 135 of 228 made field goals (59.2 percent).
 
FORCING TURNOVERS
The Deacs had 11 steals overall against Georgetown which was the fourth time this season they have forced double-digit steals and the first time since the win over Saint Louis in Hawaii.
 
The Deacs have forced double-digit turnovers in every game this season and have turned over opponents 172 times in 11 games.
 
Against Villanova, the Demon Deacons turned the Wildcats over a season-high 10 times in the game as Villanova came into the contest second in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio.
 
Prior to that, Wake Forest forced 19 Saint Louis turnovers, the second-most the Billikens had committed in a single game this season and it resulted in 20 points on the other end for the Demon Deacons.
 
In the Deacs' game against BYU, they forced 26 turnovers, marking the most since January 22, 2017 against Georgia Tech when the Demon Deacons also forced 26 turnovers in the game.  Additionally, it was the first time since December 18 and 21, 2017 against Charlotte and College of Charleston that Wake Forest has produced 20 or more opponent turnovers in back-to-back games. It marked the first time since March 16, 2017 (Washington State) that a Power-5 team had forced BYU into 26 or more turnovers.
 
FROM THE LINE
Graduate guard Kaia Harrison went perfect at the free throw line against Georgetown, knocking down 4-of-4 from the stripe. Overall this season, Harrison is 44-of-50 (88.0 pct.), ranking fourth in the ACC and 41st nationally in free throw percentage.
 
As a team, Wake Forest went 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) from the free throw line against Norfolk State, the third-highest percentage of the season and third time the Deacs finished above 80 percent. Through 11 games this season, the Demon Deacons have seen a massive uptick in free throw shooting percentage, going from 66.0 percent (343-of-520) last season to 73.5 percent (122-of-126) this season.
 
Wake Forest is totaling 11.1 free throws made per game this year compared to last year's 10.1 free throws made per game.
 
SENIOR LEADERS
Against Georgetown, the Deacs were led by their senior leaders in Alexandria Scruggs and Kaia Harrison who both finished in double-figure scoring. Scruggs tallied double-digit points for the second-consecutive game and the third time in the last five games, ending the afternoon with a team-high 13 points including going 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
 
Harrison posted 10 points, her third consecutive double-figure game and her seventh in 11 games overall this season. For the sixth time this season, she went perfect at the free throw line, knocking down 4-of-4 from the stripe. Overall this season, Harrison is 44-of-50 (88.0 pct.). The Baldwin, N.Y native also had a team-high four steals.

  • The Demon Deacons were within one with 5:00 minutes left in the game, but shots did not fall at the end, allowing the Hoyas to finish the game on a 15-0 scoring run.
  • The Deacs had 11 steals overall which was the fourth time this season they have forced double-digit steals and the first time since the win over Saint Louis in Hawaii.
  • Wake Forest also crashed the glass at the 14 offensive rebounds. Elise Williams posted a team-high seven rebounds including four offensive rebounds while also having a team-high five assists.
  • The Demon Deacons recorded 11 assists on 15 made baskets (73.3 percent) against the Hoyas. It marked the seventh-consecutive game in which the Deacs recorded at least 10 assists and ninth time overall.

  • With the Deacs trailing 50-49 with only 1:49 left in regulation, the Thundering Herd closed the game on a 10-0 run.
  • Senior Tonia Brown paced the Deacs' attack. The guard scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists and registered two steals. Brown also nailed a pair of 3-pointers - moving her into sole possession of third place on the all-time list for career 3-point field goals with 120.
