
No. 9 Wake Forest Concludes Action at ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championship

The Deacs will take a nine-day hiatus before returning to the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
CHICAGO, Ill. – The ninth-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team fell to No. 17 Stanford, 4-0, Sunday night inside the XS Tennis Village in Chicago, Ill., to conclude play at the 2023 ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championship.
Despite playing their sixth match in the last 10 days, the Demon Deacons (11-5, 0-0 ACC) forced several third sets in singles but were unable to register a match victory against the Cardinal (7-4, 0-0 PAC 12).
Stanford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind victories in first and second doubles, before securing wins in first, third and sixth singles to clinch the victory.
Of note, four of Wake Forest's six opponents over the past 10 days were ranked within the top-20 nationally, including three top-10 foes.

How It Happened
- Stanford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in doubles action as Samir Banerjee/Filip Kolasinski defeated Jurabek Karimov/Luciano Tacchi, 6-3.
- The Cardinal then clinched the doubles point as Arthur Fery/Nishesh Basavareddy defeated Juan Lopez de Azcona/Filippo Moroni, 6-2, in first doubles.
- Matthew Thomson/Melios Efstathiou held a 5-4 lead in third doubles over Max Basing/Anders Matta prior to Stanford clinching the doubles point.
- For the third-consecutive match, Wake Forest dropped the doubles point and faced a 1-0 deficit heading into singles play.
- Stanford came out strong in singles as the Cardinal won set one in five of the six matches.
- Karimov became the first Deac to win a set as he took set one against No. 2 Basavareddy.
- Thomson nearly took the opening set in fifth singles but Kolasinski of Stanford battled back to win the set in a tiebreaker.
- Stanford took a 2-0 lead as No. 43 Fery knocked off Efstathiou 6-2, 6-2 in first singles.
- Despite dropping five opening sets, Wake Forest forced a deciding set in third and sixth singles.
- The Cardinal extended their lead to 3-0 as Neel Rajesh edged Bozo Barun (6-2, 4-6, 6-0) on court 12.
- No. 4 Basing then defeated Moroni in second singles to clinch the 4-0 victory for Stanford.
