No. 4 Wake Forest Visits UNC Greensboro for First Midweek Action of 2023

Coming off a perfect 4-0 start to the new year, the No. 4 Demon Deacons hit the road for its first midweek action of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Fresh off a opening weekend sweep, the No. 4 Wake Forest baseball team visits UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Feb. 21 for its first midweek action of the season at UNC Greensboro Baseball Stadium. 

Wake Forest has started the season 4-0 for the second-straight year after plating 45 runs (11.25 runs per game) with 13 home runs (second in the nation) and 35 walks (third in the nation) throughout opening weekend. 

Also, the Deacs have only conceded just eight runs (two runs per game), the fewest number of runs the Deacs have allowed in the first four games in head coach Tom Walter's tenure.

Wake Forest has struck out 60 batters, while only conceding nine walks. 

First pitch on Tuesday is slated for 4:00 p.m. against the Spartans. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+ with a paid subscription. Additionally, fans can tune into an audio streaming broadcast through the Wake Forest Athletics app.

Opponent/Series History                                                                                                                      

  • Tuesday marks the 61st matchup between the Deacs and Spartans. Wake Forest holds a 44-16 record in those games. 

  • The Deacs are currently on a three-game win streak against its Triad rival. Last season, Wake Forest swept the season series versus UNC Greensboro, defeating them 23-3 on Feb. 22 and 10-7 on April 12.

Wake Forest Highlights                                                                                                                                                                                     

  • Wake Forest has started its campaign 4-0 for the second-straight season after a perfect opening weekend, earning a pair of wins against Youngstown State and Illinois. 

  • Currently, Wake Forest is just one of four power five schools to have already won four games in 2023 (Texas Tech, Oregon and Washington State).

  • Coach Walter is in his 14th season at the helm of the Wake Forest baseball program in 2023. 

    • With 370 wins as the Demon Deacon skipper, he sits as the second-winningest coach in program history, trailing only George Greer. 

    • Additionally, Walter is one of just two active head coaches in the country to lead three different programs to the NCAA Division I Tournament, becoming just the seventh coach all-time to do so. 

    • On April 10, 2022, Walter picked up the 350th win at the helm of the Demon Deacon baseball program as Wake Forest swept Big Four rival Duke for the first time since 2008. 

    • Walter is currently two wins away from 800 victories as a collegiate head coach. 

  • Sophomore preseason All-American Nick Kurtz and sophomore left handed pitcher Sean Sullivan swept the first Atlantic Coast Conference Weekly Awards, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.

  • The Deacs have only conceded eight runs (two runs per game), the fewest number of runs the Deacs have allowed in the first four games in head coach Tom Walter's tenure. Wake Forest has struck out 60 batters, while only conceding nine walks. 

  • In addition to being the lowest number of runs conceded through the first four games of Coach Walter's Wake Forest tenure, the Demon Deacon pitching staff ranks in the top two of the ACC and top-15 nationally all pitching categories while leading the nation in strikeouts per nine innings:

    • Ks per Nine Innings- 1st in the nation, 1st in the ACC

    • WHIP- 10th in the nation, 2nd in the ACC

    • ERA- 14th in the nation, 2nd in the ACC

    • Hits per Nine Innings- 15th in the nation, 2nd in the ACC

  • Overall, Wake Forest plated 45 runs (11.25 runs per game) with 13 runs and 35 walks in its first four contests. 

  • Through the first four games, the Demon Deacons have one of the most prolific offenses in the nation:

    • HRs- 2nd in the nation, 1st in the ACC

    • Walks- 3rd in the nation, 1st in the ACC

    • Slugging Percentage- 8th in the nation, 1st in the ACC

    • Hits- 13th in the nation, 2nd in the ACC

    • On-Base Percentage- 21st in the nation, 3rd in the ACC

    • Average- 48th in the nation, 4th in the ACC

  • Wake Forest's bats came alive against Illinois and Youngstown State, combining for a batting average of .320 with 41 hits, 13 home runs, 44 RBI as well as a slugging percentage of .688 and on-base percentage of .477. 

  • Overall, six Deacs launched a long fly during opening weekend, headlined by Adam Cecere and Nick Kurtz with four apiece. Brock Wilken also hit multiple home runs, sending the ball over the fence in back-to-back games against Illinois and Youngstown State. 

  • Adam Cecere and Nick Kurtz head into midweek action as the only players in the nation with four home runs. 

  • Wake Forest was the only consensus top-10 team in the ACC heading into the new season, highlighted by a No. 5 ranking in Perfect Game's Preseason Top-25 Poll.

Wake Forest heads back to The Couch for another four-game weekend against Binghamton, Mount St. Mary's and Towson on Feb. 24-26. 

The Deacs will open the weekend against Binghamton on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra before playing a Saturday doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's (2 p.m.) and Towson (6 p.m.). Wake Forest will close out the weekend against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday at 2 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
