Demon Deacons Primed for Raleigh Relays

The team will look to build off a successful first weekend of outdoor action.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — After an opening weekend that saw over 10 podium finishes, five gold medals and a new program record for the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams, the Deacs are now set to compete at the Raleigh Relays from Thursday, March 23 to Saturday, March 25.

The event will take place at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility located on NC State's campus and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra all three days. The stream will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The action will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday with the women's pole vault, men's javelin and women's shot put.

Admission to the Raleigh Relays is free.

Last Time Out - 49er Classic and Bob Webb/Bill Davidson Memorial

The Wake Forest men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up a very successful first weekend of outdoor action at the 49er Classic and the Bill Webb/Bob Davidson Memorial. Several Demon Deacons finished in a top-10 position, including 12 podium finishes and five gold medalists.

Leia Braunagel broke the school record in the women's discus with a throw of 52.74m and took home one of four first-place finishes for the Demon Deacons in High Point Saturday. Amanda Schaare recorded a 50.10m mark, which now ranks second in school history, and finished in second place.

The Deacs completed a podium sweep in the women's shot put, as Ashlyn Giles led the way with a 15.41m for the third-best throw in school history. Schaare (15.24m) picked up her second silver medal of the day and Casey Sullivan (13.64m) rounded-out the top three.

Amy Harding-Delooze (4:37.32) and Laura Giudice (2:23.14) also picked up first-place finishes in the women's 1500m and 800m, respectively. 

White followed up his All-American performance at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a third placed finish in the hammer throw. The graduate student threw a 60.99m, which ranks sixth in program history. On Friday, he recorded his second podium finish of the weekend with a 55.51m in the discus to finish third. He now owns two of the top five discus throws in program history.

Also on Friday, Rynard Swanepoel clocked a 3:47.85 to win the men's 1500m at the 49er Invitational. His new personal best helped him finish over three seconds faster than second place.

The Demon Deacons will leave North Carolina for the first time in the outdoor season as they head to Austin, Texas to compete at the Texas Relays from Wednesday, March 29 to Saturday, April 1.
