Braunagel Notches Second Victory on Final Day of the VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C.
– The Wake Forest men's and women's outdoor track & field teams wrapped up the VertKlasse Meeting Saturday at Vert Stadium in High Point. The Demon Deacons grabbed four podium finishes on day two to bring the weekend total to eight. 

Leia Braunagel continued her dominant 2023 campaign in the women's discus, as the graduate student claimed her second gold medal of the season with a throw of 51.22m. Additionally, Amanda Schaare notched her second podium of the weekend and fourth on the season with a personal-best 50.87m (second in program history) to complete the Wake Forest 1-2 in the event.

Bianca Nolde-Lopez grabbed her first podium finish of the season after she clocked a season-best 57.93 in the women's 400m for the bronze.

Emma Soderstrom (1.63m) and Anna Bush (1.63m) finished in fourth and eighth, respectively, in the women's high jump.

Andrew White closed out the weekend with a season-best 56.08m in the men's discus and recorded a third-place finish. 

Notable Weekend Finishes

From Friday

Jack Pihlkar threw 62.35m in the men's hammer to earn the gold medal in the first event of the weekend. The mark is the fourth-best in program history as he now owns two of the top five. It was his third top-10 finish and first podium of the season. Of note, Andrew White (58.84m) and Jake Goldberg (58.56m) finished in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Schaare continued to improve on her impressive season as she notched a 15.42m in the women's shot put to claim first place. The throw moves her to third in program history and the best since 2019. Ashlyn Giles (14.83m) grabbed her third-consecutive podium to open the season with a third-place finish in the event. Additionally, Casey Sullivan (13.28m) finished in 10th.

Leigh Walters added to the podium finishes as she clocked a personal-best 17:09.85 in the women's 5000m and finished in second place. It marks the sophomore's first podium of the season.
