No. 18 Wake Forest Defeats Boston College to Conclude 2023 Regular Season

The Demon Deacons improved to 17-0 against the Eagles all-time.

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – In its final regular-season match of the 2023 campaign, the No. 18-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated ACC foe Boston College, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Weymouth Club in Weymouth, Mass.
 
Sunday's victory improved the Demon Deacons (23-10, 7-5 ACC) to a perfect 17-0 all-time against Boston College.
 
Wake Forest clinched the doubles point Sunday behind wins in the first and second slots as Matthew Thomson/Filippo Moroni downed Mason Fung/Jake Vassel, 6-4, before No. 73 Jurabek Karimov/Luciano Tacchi stormed back to defeat Juan Jose Bianchi/Max Motlagh, 7-5.
 
The Demon Deacons' momentum from doubles play carried over into singles as the Deacs took the opening set on 5/6 courts. Wake Forest went on to accumulate a 5-1 mark in singles action to secure the 6-1 victory over the Eagles.
 
Of note, with a 6-2, 6-3 win in sixth singles, freshman Saud Alhogbani improved to a perfect 5-0 in dual singles action this season.
 
The Demon Deacons have secured the No. 6 seed in this year's ACC Tournament and will face the 11th seed (Virginia Tech, Clemson or Notre Dame) on Thursday, April 20 in Cary. The Deacs will officially find out their opponent once all matches across the league have ended for the day.
 
How It Happened
  • For the first time in conference play, head coach Tony Bresky placed the duo of Bozo Barun and Saud Alhogbani at third doubles in the Wake Forest lineup.
  • Doubles play started tightly-contested as Wake Forest led in the first and second slots, while Boston College led on court three.
  • Boston College struck first in doubles as Will Kasten/Anesh Jayasundera defeated Barun/Alhogbani on court three.
  • Thomson/Moroni became the first pair of Deacs to win a match as they defeated Mason Fung/Jake Vassel, 6-4, in second doubles.
  • Wake Forest clinched the doubles point behind a 7-5 victory in first doubles by Karimov/Tacchi.
    • The Demon Deacons held a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
  • The Deacs' momentum from doubles action carried over into singles as Wake Forest won the opening set on five courts.
  • Tacchi became the first Deac to win a singles match as he defeated Matt Campbell 6-1, 6-0 to give the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead.
  • Alhogbani extended Wake Forest's advantage to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win in sixth singles.
    • Alhogbani improved to 5-0 in dual singles action with the victory.
  • Lopez de Azcona clinched the win, downing Vassel 6-4, 6-3 in fifth singles.
    • The two sides chose to play out the remainder of the contest despite the clinch.
  • Minutes later, Moroni knocked off Motlagh (7-5, 7-5), giving the Deacs a 5-0 lead.
  • Barun then took down Mai Gao 6-3, 7-6 shortly after in fourth singles.
  • The Eagles notched their first, and only, singles win with a victory in second singles.
  • Wake Forest defeated Boston College (6-1), improving to 17-0 against the Eagles all-time.
